84 XT600 Clutch Cover Needed.

I'm in need of a right side clutch cover for my 84 XT600. It has a hair line crack about the kick starter that goes all the way to the edge of the case. because of of the stress from the kick starter the crack cracked through my jb weld attempt to fix it. It doesn't leak bad, it just seeps a very little amount of oil. I would like to get another case so when the crack does worsen I'm not stuck without a bike. And I don't have the cash for a brand new one. Thanks!

I,d be tempted to lay the bike on its side........remove clutch cover and have it welded.......refit and no need to drain the oil....its an option and cheaper than new...

bacardi23 14 Apr 2013 08:46

You should have it TIG welded and it'll be good as new or better! ;)

feetchermancj 16 Apr 2013 18:36

Thanks for the tips guys but the cover is magnesium so I can't find anyone that will weld it :(

feetchermancj 19 Apr 2013 23:46

Mind sharing a link? Haven't seen any one ebay that will work on an 84.

feetchermancj 21 Apr 2013 00:58

Sweet thanks! I'll give it a try.

feetchermancj 21 May 2013 22:34

Thanks for the link. Didn't see it in time :/

I bought an 88 because of the kick starter, guy thought it was cracked, but it wasn't. Anyway I now have a 3/8 hardish rubber stop for the kick lever to hit and gradually stop. I'm hoping to not have it crack. I did find several just a couple weeks ago by going to the salvage yards ebay store. Not all items are listed or come up in a search so you may have to spend some time going through pages and pages of meaningless parts to find it, they are out there and generally not that pricey, There is a low mileage motor for sale right now that is awfully tempting, just to keep the bike alive for a good long while.:scooter:

I welded a "kickstop" - thick piece of 316 stainless steel - directly to my footstand!

but yeah, it can be TIG welded if you have the correct filler rod!

If you find more clutch covers, mind sending me a link? Thanks.

I did see a clutch cover for a '90 on Ebay, I typed in a search for "XT600 parts" (I was looking for another cdi) and it came up somewhere around page 10. didn't save a link but the name of the store is World Wide Motorcycle Parts and more. It is a little different and is for the electric start model but I believe you can take out the kickstart insert.

feetchermancj 29 May 2013 22:46

Thanks for the tip! Anyone know if that would fit my 84?

feetchermancj 30 May 2013 21:12

Thanks Mezo! Any advice on translating what the page says? I'm having a hard time.

jjrider 30 May 2013 21:15

The '90 will fit on the clutch side, If you can wait a bit there should be cheaper ones coming up otherwise. That guy is one of the ripoffs as far as prices and shipping goes.

Mezo, he is in Bend, Oregon US. shipping may be not worth it coming from Europe. That is a guess.

Actually I found a bottom end for electric start over there(can't translate either) if something could be worked out to ship the parts together and share shipping cost( obviously I would need to pay a bit more). Anyone that can help

Mezo!
Of course it will fit.I did that on my 85 55W.

There you will see the diferences on the kick area(stronger zone around seal)
I strongly recomend you to buy that 3TB cover. All parts are mechanized to use kick even if the nike was only electric start.

Do I need to change the oil pump as well if I use the 3TB cover?

BCK_973 12 Jun 2013 01:29

No you dont!
But it is adviced to replace the old 5Y1 type(from XT 550) to the better 3AJ.
If you are located in the US look at ebay.I got bothy from USA.Pump and cover for 40 U$S.

pusser65 12 Jun 2013 09:59

feetchermancj, do you mean you can't open the links or that you don't understand German? If it is the latter try Google translator or some other translator.

There are heaps for sale on ebay.

Mezo.

Am I right in thinking it's just the covers are magnesium and the crankcase itself is aluminium? Gotta do a bit of welding...

Thanks.

bacardi23 25 Jul 2013 01:07

whatever you do, you should first make a spark test so you know what you're actually welding on!
Just google or go on youtube and you'll see what to look for!
