43F Throttle Cables Question

My 43F has the dual throttle cables but is missing the push one. It seemed to run fine without it before I disassembled the bike. What's the purpose of 2 cables and do I need to replace them?

You can ride it with just the pull cable with no problem as long as the throttle moves freely up and down...

And from what I've tried, on the Mikuni BST40 carb, which is a dual cable setup aswell it worked perfectly with only the pull cable!

Hi
2 throttle cables, 1 opens the carb, 1 close's the carb. Skip

well, kinda!
The spring closes the carb! As long as the spring is still good of course!
the cable can help but only slightly..

The Japs, very cleverly in my opinion, made their bikes more comfortable to ride by reducing the strength of the spring that pushes the throttle slide closed. This makes the throttle lighter and less of a strain on the wrist. The problem is that when the spring is too light the bike may not slow down so well on the overrun. The air trying to flow through the carb body is more successful in pushing the lighter spring back up. Answer? Use a second cable to operate in the opposite direction and pull the slide down again. Ditching the second cable may have an adverse effact or it may not. It varies from bike to bike. If you're happy with how it rides without it, then carry on. If it seems to affect the way the bike slows down, then put it back.
One advantage of having the second cable is that it could be used as a spare, albeit with a bit of messing about.
