1vj tenere at high altitudes ?

Hi folks. Im planning a trip to south america in the next few years and am wondering about bike choice. I was going to buy a f.i. Bike to cope with the altitude changes, but im not sure the money will stretch that far. At the moment i am toying with taking my 1vj tenere, but have heard they are pants at altitude - and i know what a pig of a job it is to change the needles/jets. My question is how easy is it to retro fit the air compensator thingy off a 3ds tenere? Does it work? and how easy are they to find? (Ok that's 3 questions). Any thoughts?
Cheers,
Karl.

I think it's a stand alone system that is installed with the carb , not really bike specific, so shouldn't be too hard. Sweden is the only country that used them IIRC.

One other option that may help to a certain extent in the need for changing jetting is to install 2 or even 4 Dial-A-Jets on your carbs. What they do is allow more easier jetting changes without need to remove the carb(s). When istalling you go 2 or 3 main jet sizes smaller than normal and the Dial-a-jets setup then adds the remainder as needed by the motor ,so at higher altitudes you can lean them out quite a bit (the more used the more adjustment you have). For the lowend you turn the mixture screw in to lean out that area. It's a different setup and not very common so people don't understand it but I've used them on several quads and bikes , they work , not sure if enough for extreme altitude changes but I wouldn't doubt with 4 there'd be enough.

EFI would be ideal if using a closed loop system , so an O2 sensor can tell the ecu to pull fuel , otherwise a piggyback controller would be needed to pull fuel as you go up.

If his carbs don't have the nipples in one or both of those spots I've used threaded nipples in a few carbs ,
