1992 Yamaha 660 HELP w\shifting trouble

I have a 92 660 that the top end was just rebuilt. Now when I shift up I don't have any trouble, just not real smooth. When shifting down it does not want to go in the next lower gear. First gear is the worst. When going from neutral to first it is next to impossible and some times works better if you shift down while letting the clutch out slowly. This bike sat for over a year, so my question is would it be the clutch plates or the gear box causing the trouble?

Thanks for your help,
Mac

Its fairly easy to check the cluthplates, the gasket is cheap, or you can use rtv/liquid gasket to "top of" the orginal gasket.

Thanks

Thanks for advice. I may do that. If it were the clutches would not it do the same for every gear?

It seems easier on the clutch to upshift, you can do it without with a small amount of practice.

I'd check it, if anything you can rule that out afterwards.
