1986 Yamaha Xt 600

I have a 1986 Yamaha xt600 that I am trying to bring back to life. I took the carb(s) off and cleaned them out. I replaced the diaphram on the side of the carb. I rodded out all jets. Its clean enough to eat off of, but it is soooo hard to start when it is cold. I look like this http://www.cyclechaos.com/4um/images/smilies/mad.gif when I finally get it started. I sometimes have to give it a boost to get it started. Once it starts and stays running it runs pretty good. When its warm you can kick it easy one time and it will fire right up. So anyone have any ideas as to why its hard to start? How does the choke on this carb work and how do I know if it is working correctly?

Also what are the valve clearences?

Valve Clearances (Cold)

Inlet 0.05-0.10mm (0.002 - 0.00 in)
Exhaust 0.12 - 0.17mm (0.005 - 0.007 in)


The choke is a very simple item on the XT.... strip it out and make sure it aint sticking.

Just a tip..... DO NOT USE ANY THROTTLE! leave it alone until she fires or you will be a pool of sweat ( as you found out :innocent:) before you ever get her going

My routine.... choke on, fuel on, gentle press on kickstart to operate decompressor.Kick once....., Repeat. as soon as she fires give it a little gas....... no more than 30 seconds on the choke,,, they dont need it.

The clymer manual I have gives much larger valve gaps than those you quote. Where do you get your info. ( I own a 1986 IVJ Tenere maybe they are different.
