Loads of us SJ, loads of us! Three of us are going across the Sahara on scooters in March ( me, Debz and Nadsicles) and then across Russia, Mongolia and more in the summe, in various combinations. See, we got the vote and now we can't help oursleves.

Selous 13 Feb 2012 17:01

& what of Lois, (who has done 2 trips on her own, Africa & south america?)
or Sabina (don't know her last Name), there are a few others but have forgotten there names at the mo

sofie 22 Feb 2012 03:21

i drove with my husband 7 months in all off south-america i drove a BMW F650 with to muth luggage :-). On this trip we met 3 other copples, 2 canadian and one german. one we met in chile, one in argentina and the other in ecuador. We started this trip because we met a copple the year before in argentina. All the copples we met where the same: woman drove here on bike !! so lady's are doing good i think !!! keep riding

maria41 22 Feb 2012 12:55

Hmm let me think...

During my year around south america with my husband (riding my own bike! This trip was my dream, my idea and I organised all including choice of bikes routing etc...) I met:

4 germans girls riding solo in Viedma;
Several north american and canadian women riding solo in Viedma or ushuaia;
Sandra (Javier's wife) in BAs;
A Spanish Lady (wife of Xfiltrate) in BAs and Viedma;
several couples riding each their own bike;
3 couples riding 2 up in Viedma: at least 2 because of budget issues rather than because the woman did not want to ride;
Probably more ladies but I cannot remember for now....

in Vietnam: met a canadian girl riding her own bike, travelling with her brother;

Around Europe: too many to mention.
In the UK: Many!

If you get the chance to get to the UK HU Meeting at Ripley you will see what I mean! As Anonymous group says; "We are legion!" :D

kateandwill 22 Feb 2012 19:56

I did Sydney to London last year with my husband. Me on my little Xt250 and him on his DR 650. Just managed to get my bike English registered recently so looking forward to getting out and about on it again!

Scrabblebiker 23 Feb 2012 01:17

There are a fair number of us out there, including Sherri-Jo Wilkins and others.

My contribution was 25,500 solo km's from Victoria, BC, Canada to Yaviza, Darien, Panama and back in March, April, May 2010.

Japanese lady riders

Couple of years ago I met 2 Japanese girls riding Suzuki 250 Jebels from Cape Town back Japan or as far as they would get. We were in a Landcruiser doing a double trans Africa. The girls were not travelling together all the time but hooked up for the tough stretches. We travelled for a couple of weeks with one of them through Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt and she told us her story.

http://exploreafrica.weblog.nl/files/2006/10/614fce710c

They both entered a contest by Suzuki what they would do when they were given a new Jebel! They fantasised about crossing Africa and they won and they got the new bikes from Suzuki and were send of to South Africa! From that moment they were on their own. They spoke only very little English and had no clue about mechanics at all, as matter of fact they could not really drive bikes but they were funny and charming as hell.
I know one of them (Noriko) made it all the way to India and then was fed up with the travelling and got back home.

We travelled for 5 weeks together and those were excellent weeks and I got to know and appreciate a bit of the Japanese culture and habits.

Cheers,
Noel

Travels

Hi passed my big bike test four years ago but ride pillion on our world travels.

Need to post another three posts so that I can reply to emails, so please bear with me. :mchappy:

Ellen 8 Mar 2012 10:07

New Zealand

Our first trip, which turned into three visits over three years, meant that we rode around NZ north and south islands - what a beautiful place, so what do we do with the bike that my partner Keith bought over there? Ship it over to Australia of course.

Post no. 3

Ellen 8 Mar 2012 10:10

Australia

We toured around the Australian perimeter in two trips, loved Tasmania - a biker's paradise.

OK Aus completed - where now, ship over to Timor-Leste and Indonesia via Darwin.

Post no. 4

Ellen 8 Mar 2012 10:19

Timor-Leste

Loved Dili, but what an eye opener and an introduction to pot-holed and incredibly overcrowded roads.

Onwards into Indonesia, visiting Flores, Sumbawa, Lombok and Bali.

Return to Bali in a few weeks time to complete the island, then onwards to Java, Sumatra, Malaysia and Thailand - can't wait to get there.:wave:

Post no. 5 completed.

Women Bikers

Thank you ladies ,,
Please keep posting, with your accomplishments,,, let's show what women power is !

I'm currently in New Zealand solo on a BMW f650GS - been here 2 1/2 months and leaving 2 April.

I've ridden solo from Alaska to the Mexican border but not in a straight line!! then from Toronto down to Florida - about 18,000 miles total.

None bike stuff - I lived in a Merc Unimog for a year and drove across Europe to Ukraine then back to France and though Morocco down to Ghana.

Next:

I'm riding in Mongolia for a month on the way back to the UK.

Planning a ride up thorough South America starting in January.

India, Vietnam and now Africa

hi all

together with my husband we've ridden enfield's in the indian himalayas and minks the length of Vietnam.

In september we're leaving Europe and (all being well) heading all the way to Cape Town. We'll be on MT 350's old army bikes, tough as old boots and (hopefully easy to fix if needed).

So this time next year I should be able to join the 'continent' club!!

Hi SJ,
I am quite new on HU. I was traveling in the last three months in west Africa in overlanding as a travel companion. I met a kiwi woman coming from Sudan heading cape town on her bike with others travelers. We were in Addis Abeba in Ethiopia.
Humbly I give my hat to all these women traveling all around the world.
Take care and keep going ladies!

That Might Be Me!

Hey,
Im another lone kiwi travelling around the world.

This is my second trip I'm undergoing now - Australia to Africa and of course around on a DR350! I'm currently in Tanzania after leaving home October 2010.
I have a long way to go! But im enjoying it so so much!

My first trip was in 2008 Bangkok to Moscow on a xr 250 only for 10months covering 28,000km with only 6 months of road riding under my belt.

Keep it up ladies!! Let the smile spread across your face!

seouljoe 7 May 2012 14:44

Two Korean Girls

They rode 125 CC Honda scooters from Korea to UK ,,, through Siberia and Eastern Europe, in 2011.
Tiffany has been sorting them out.
Good job ladies!

hewby 19 Aug 2012 06:56

I am riding Alaska to Patagonia and maybe back, solo, over about 11 months or so... just been up to Prudohe bay and back (and around ... about 30,00km) and am stalling in Seattle before I head on south sometime this week?

Miniemojaz 2 Oct 2012 22:41

I have never traveled alone but whilst in the states recently I met a women who had just too redundancy and bought a bike and when riding..! Inspiring

becsta 3 Oct 2012 03:55

There certainly are some km/miles clocked up here already. You ladies are all an inspiration, keep up the good work. I hope one day to join you. I have only ridden in Australia and I still have most of it to see on the bike. I am planning a trip in 2017 (when I can get long service leave) the main goal is to ride Ireland and the UK but I would love to ship into Turkey to see Gallipoli and then make my way from there to the UK.

Scootergal 4 Oct 2012 02:03

I've done 29,000 then 65,000 all over Oz on my scooters...
then in '06 took my 16 year old daughter as pillion to Europe on a scooter for 4 months
and just returned from another solo trip around Europe by scooter.

Next year I am upgrading to a Postie Bike to do a lap of Oz.

Bounce 21 Nov 2012 08:21

I've never done that type of travelling, but let me tell you, ladies: your stories are fun to read and very inspiring! even if I don't own a bike now...I might consider to change that! And I will drop in this thread every now and then to see further stories you have to tell! :biggrin3:

Just so you know.

It snows in Greece! Down on the Peloponnese, Mycenae ... close to the sea... snow on the mountains in December. I was camping... look out one morning to see white stuff on the mountains. Was nice camping there by the way.

May not worry a taswegian, but was a bit of a surprise for me.

takeonafrica 22 Jun 2013 14:29

How cool - I never knew there were so many!!

Not sure I count... my bike doesn't have an engine! But I have cycled through Africa alone, and North America and Central America (notched up about 40,000km in total). And start biking across Asia tomorrow starting in Siberia (as much of Black Sea to Bering Sea as I can, although I'm having to do it in 2 parts, summer and winter).

Better still, I got my license earlier this year so after this trip I'm upgrading to a motorbike :) Then it'll count...

Sheonagh 23 Jun 2013 12:58

TakeonAfrica's book is GREAT!

I'm just reading Helen's book Desert Snow now. It is beautifully written and I'm enjoying it hugely. Helen we met briefly at HUBB.
Pat and I (Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travellers' Stories - Sheonagh Ravensdale and Pat Thomson) spent 6 months riding Honda Falcons in South America in 2006, then 16 months riding same bikes from Panama to Cambodia 2009-11 and are off in a couple of weeks to roam round Europe for a month or so, taking in the WIMA Rally in Switzerland.
For any woman traveller, WIMA has around 20 divisions all round the world, so a great resource and support network: see Wimaworld.com - main. Tiffany is also a member of WIMA.

akliz 26 Jun 2013 06:54

So far, I've only done the Alaska Highway (essentially, from Anchorage to southern British Columbia) twice, traveling with my husband. I rode my F 650GS and he was on his DR650. Had a blast, even through the road construction sections - my gravel skills aren't great and the gravelly road construction bits still scare me.

I'm eagerly planning my first major solo ride for next summer - I'm shipping my bike to Europe for a few months and will be spending a fair amount of time in eastern Europe. Not terribly adventurous, compared to so many stories here on the HUBB, but it's pretty adventurous for me :)

MissRIDER

I call myself MissRIDER and my adventures love to take me extreme distances solo riding. During the summer of 2012, I rode 15,000miles/24,000kilometers from Boston Massachusetts down to the Panama Canal and back to Boston. Summer of 2011, Los Angeles to Boston, solo ride. Summer of 2013, Boston to Newfoundland Canada to New Orleans, to Florida Keys then back to Boston Massachusetts, solo riding.

I am always annoyed by the comments of people asking me, "aren't you scared?" See my blog entry on my site: http://www.missrider.com/

Future plans:

summer 2014 - ride from Boston to Utah back to Boston and to Nova Scotia, bike = my current Triumph Bonneville

summer 2015 - complete North America tour by riding by Triumph Bonneville to Alaska from Boston (round trip).

summer 2017 - Europe, South America, Australia, Japan, Russia

I would love to find a riding partner for the South America and Russia portion of my tour. I am fluent in Spanish. I will be riding a BMW700GS for the world tour starting in 2017. I will start in the Boston area and head south through Central America.

A HUBB woman on the road

Hi everyone,

I have done a small 3 week off road trip with my husband to Morocco in 2011. We both were on a Suzuki DRZ which is a slim but high bike. We packed super light but had everything with us that we wanted (even camping gear).
In 2012 we went with the yellow ducklings (Suzuki DRZ) to the North Cape and then back through Russia, Estoni, Latvia, Ukraine an Roemania. We did a huge bit off road with some paved bits in the middle. This was a 2 month trip.
Again in 2012 we went for a 3 week trip to Thailand and went 2up on a small Honda PCX scooter 200cc). We had a blast and drove around the whole country (ok, I had to jump off the bike on a very steep hill because it was going backwards instead of forwards, but it was great!)
In 2013 we went on a 4 month trip to Mongolia and all the stan countries also with the two ducklings and also most of the while off road. It was hard, but so cool!
Next year we will start our RTW trip but this time we are going 2up on a Suzuki Vstrom. I have had enough of driving on my own for now, but hey who knows what will happen.... :D

L'ilDRling 9 Nov 2013 03:20

A few summers ago my partner, Adam, and I rode from Toronto to Moab, Utah.

We left 2 weeks ago on our Trans-Continental Mambo tour which will take us down to Ushuaia and hopefully up the east coast of Africa. We are riding our own bikes, DR650s. So far we have been plagued with engine issues (on my bike) and are housed up in Texas, but will hopefully be back on our way soon!

Europe Tour 2017

Hi MissRider, 2017 is quite a bit in the future. Even so we (my wife Manuela and me ) want to offer a place to stay in our not so cheap country. Would love to show you a lovely part of Germany around Heidelberg. Not Heidelberg itself, too much tourists there.
We plan a ride Canada West-Alaska-Canada East in 2015 with our Oldies, a 82 Harley and a 73 Triumph Bonneville.

Best regards
Robert

Wow... So many amazing trips, fair play to you girls!

Hopefully later this year I'll be able to add my own. In June I'm departing from the West of Ireland and riding solo across Europe, The Stans, Mongolia to Magadan (and then to Vlad) on my Yamaha TTR250. Can't wait!!! :w00t:

I'm also back on the road at the end of this month... first stop Canberra, then Bright for the Adventure Travel Film Festival and then west for a lap around Oz... solo on a 110cc Postie Bike.

Anaire, where are you from. Dingle? We're based in Clare! That's a fantastic and very courageous solo ride you have planned. We'd love to come and see you off. All the very best of luck.

I'm a girl, loosely speaking. I'm 51 this year. I've been riding big bikes for over 20 years and have the curious distinction of having introduced my OH to biking - rather than the other way round. He, on the other hand, became an instant fanatic and persuaded me to travel on two wheels. We've clocked up tens of thousands of miles, criss-crossing the States, and did a 6,500-mile round trip charity ride from Moscow (a tiny village in Scotland) to Moscow (a slightly better known city in Russia) and back.

Next year, we are planning a charity ride from Ireland to China ... and onward, RTW, in support of teenage mental health charities. Riding in China is likely to be a challenge for all sorts of reasons, but we are fortunate to have local Chinese contacts to help with the bureaucracy. In the meantime, we are repeating the BMW Off Road Skills and Maintenance courses we did in 2009 - which, coincidentally, dovetail quite nicely with the HU Event at Donnington. If any of you are there on the Friday or Saturday, keep an eye out for us. (We'll be easy to spot, unfortunately. We'll be coming by car!)

My current bike is a BMW R1150GS. We're aiming to get a couple of G650GS Sertaos for the China trip.

Hi mrsroynie!

Fair play to you, that's some great travels you have planned! I'd love to go to China, it's so tempting... just next door to Vladivostok... Ah, to have the money! :)

I'm originally from Poland but I've been living in Dublin (and Wicklow) for the past 7 years. I just figured since I'm going that far East, it would be nice to start as far West as I can, hence Dingle. I'd love to have a little farewell ride out so do pop down if you're around! I want to do the BMW course as well, although probably an earlier one, but I'm aiming to be at the HU event so I might see you there :)

Confused She-Biker

Hi All!

I'm BRAND new to the HUBB & back in Oz for a couple of weeks to visit family & try to get my Honda from Melbourne, AUS, to Santiago, CHILE. Just reading all of the post on shipping has boggled my mind :helpsmilie::helpsmilie::helpsmilie:

Having very limited hands-on mechanical experience with my bike leads me to the conclusion that this may be a process that is beyond me, (lets not even speak of building a crate myself!). I am not a helpless nube and do have some mechanical and carpentry skills, but limited funds & as such am wondering if anyone could advise whether it really is an option.

One year in Chile without a bike has been very hard & the thought of buying a "Euromot" or other such brand that I've never heard of, while my baby sits in a garage at home is just sad.

Any comments appreciated!

Cheers,

Hello Magda ,, welcome to the HUBB,,
This is where I also started ,, reading ,, those who went before me ,,
Best suggestion is ,, to call your local Honda dealer ,, then ask them for the pallet that they have used to ship the bikes. You see ,, all the bikes are sent on an individual pallet. It is very light aluminium, with necessary tie downs and a card board box top. They usually give them to you for free,, most of the time they are recycled and they have to pay others to dispose of them.

Then the shipping ,, ocean or air ,,
Since direct ocean route is probably scarce ,, direct from Aussie to S.America,,, Best is to find a freight forwarder in your town,, then have them ship the pallet as a LCL (less than container) ,,meaning you are sharing a box, with strangers.
Give these forwarders a call ,, I bet the transit time is 35 - 40 days. Happag-Lloyd and Maersk ,, goes from Sydney to Manzanilo, Mexico ,, then feeders off to S,America.

https://www.google.co.kr/search?q=di...ralia+to+Chile

Now air cargo ,,
This company specialises between Australia and Chile as well as Colombia and Argentina direct.
Welcome to Lancargo - www.lancargo.com

But being air cargo does not mean ,, it has to fly direct ,,
You can call any of the airlines,, such as Korean air ,, Sydney to Seoul then direct to Chile ,, since Korea is the largest importer of Chilean agri products ,, or Air Canada ,, United ,, Delta ,, Quantas,,,they route your bike via Vancouver, LA what ever ,, on and on ,,
Again ,, get hold of a fright forwarder. Transit time a week at most.

Expect about USD 2,500 for the air cargo ,, USD 1,500 minimum for the ocean ,,,
again ,, it is imperative that you get hold of that free pallet,, it can be Suzuki ,, Yamaha ,, BMW ,, they are all same,, so start calling. You save several hundred.

Good luck!

I've made 2 solo cross country trips.
First in 2001 on a HD Sportster - north from Los Angeles, CA to Canada through the Canadian Rockies across Canada, over the top of the great lakes, into Montreal, then south to New Jersey (family visit) then back through the midwest. In Chicago I joined a 75th anniversary run of Rte. 66 back to LA. About 10,000 miles.

In 2007 I took my HD Dyna Superglide across the USA, through the southwest, gulf states, stoping in New Orleans to spend a bit doing some rehab help in the 9th ward on Katrina damage, then east into Florida and north through the Dragon's Tail and up the Blue Ridge Parkway, back into New Jersey and then east through the middle of the country and back to LA. About 8,000 miles. Then joined my boyfriend and his son for a ride into Chaco Canyon Cultural Park (the Stonehenge of the USA).

Late fall, we are planning a ride down to Panama on our BMW GS's.

Having lingered here for a while as a cyclist, I finally think I can say I'm recently fully converted... in the last 2 months I got the gear, got a Serow, been on my first 10-day trip to Scotland round and back, then just returned from a weekend trail-riding, and now got a few bruises! Have clocked up my first 5000km (much faster than the first 5 on the bicycle!) and am loving it all so far...

Thanks for all the early advice about bike and gear and all!

Pics from the trails...

Here's to more fun in the UK until next summer when I shoot for distant shores, hopefully!

Woman builds diesel-powered motorcycle + Cow sculpture

"Miami artist, Billie Grace Lynn, built a turbo diesel-powered, waste-veggie-oil-burning beast on a mission to save the planet #madcowproject"

Yesterday, in Flagstaff, AZ in the parking lot of a Home Depo rosa del desierto and I happened upon Billie (Miami based sculptor and filmmaker) and her sister .... while they were backing her "beast" aka. her latest work of art off it's trailer - towed behind a camper truck.

Photo here:

https://www.facebook.com/MadCowCycle...type=1&theater

Billie built a turbo diesel powered motorcycle and artistically decorated it with the complete skeleton of a cow.

She is here in Arizona filming a "feminized version of Easy Rider" . My initial reaction was "What are you going to call your movie?" "Easy Cow?"
She laughed and was not offended at all. Immediately I liked her.

But after spending time getting to know Billie I realized she had a very serious mission, explained on her facebook. Has something to do with eating less meat....

Of course we invited Billie and her sister to our ranch in Flagstaff... will keep you posted... and please do your own research on this amazing woman.

Billie and her sister are very interesting.

Hello all,
I am a new girl here, most of the time reading and dreaming of a long journey. But since 2011 we are making some short trips outside Europe. We went to Marocco, Senegal (Malaga to Dakar), Kenya and Tanazia. All out trips are not more than three weeks, because besides working (earn some money to go on holiday:cool4:) we love to go on holiday.
But also for the short trips, I can get her a lot of inspiration.
Next year I want to go to Bolivia, something else than Africa.

So don't dream your life, but ride your dream.

Greatings Selma

For my riding adventures I have a blog. At the moment only in Dutch.

Hi ladies. Im currently 5 months into our trip from Australia and hopefully to London. Ive only been riding 18 months total and Im 57. The shipping agent in Penang Malaysia says Im the oldest female overlander to pass through there in 30 yrs! My partner and I are both on DR650s. Its all Ive known and do think its too heavy and cumbersome for me, but Im managing and improving but my pace and my partner's are very different.

One more!

Great adventures all!
Just letting you all know there is another girl in the crowd

So far I've done 9 countries in 10 days in Europe.
New Zealand top to bottom solo.
And the biggest trip: around Australia. From Perth across the south to Brisbane, straight through Alice Springs and 3000km of gravel back to Perth and then up to Darwin. This was parts solo, parts with others.

In a few weeks I'm of to South East Asia, from there I'll have to see how the money goes. But hope to make it to The Netherlands at some point.

If you want to check updates on my latest adventure:

Blog will follow soon!

Keep riding :thumbup1:
