Yamaha TTR600, too sporty ?
 

Hi there,
I am considering a TTR for travels. I just can't get rid of the idea of being able to drop the side cases and rip it offroad. Its also simple and decently powerful. And the looks with that rally style front :yes:The seat is meant to be quiet uncomfortable but I guess it can be repaded, right ? But what really is a concern to me is gear ratios, I've read that its a bit short for long distance rides.
Is there any experience with TTR's here ? Wasn't able to find much with the search function.

Bruno Blum who travelled extensively in the 1990s and early 2000 used nothing but the TTR600, I think he had three fitting the same large tank, single seat and aluminium panniers to all of them, said they were the best bike for the job.

sporty you are joking !34 hp just an old plodder, good bike will chug along for ages . may be low geared but can be changed to suit your needs . there are better more modern bikes out there .

you will need to reinforce the rear frame to carry stuff, but thats easy. the engine is perfect for traveling, just choose your gearing.

I had a TT600E (made in Italy) before I choose the XT600Z Tenere as my RTW bike in 1999. Main reasons for selling the TT, were the cost of adding a kick starter, bigger tank and the electrical problems I had with it.

A friend is now riding around the world on a TT600R, his name is Michael Lorenz, if you want I cant get you his contact details.

It's far from sporty!

Power is adequate, it'll do 70mph down the highway but you wouldn't want to do that all day everyday and it's more than enough power off road for touring unless you are a fast rider.

It'd make a good travel bike, cheap, simple. Rode one across morocco, really enjoyed it.

It depends what your trip looks like. The bike is perfect for TET routes combined with stretches of B-roads, it will do highway as well (+- 110km/h ) in relative comfort. Maintenance is low and it rides like a tractor, nice for hill climbs but it's far from sporty. If you want sporty, look at the KTM 690 or 701, but they are pricey. For long distance riding (mostly tarmac) i would suggest the XT660Z, more offroad -> TTR.
