I ride an XJ 900 as well. Built 1988. Good bike to do long distances, but pretty heavy.
Nice windshield. Smooth running with a 4 cyl. The engine is bullet proof. If you stumble over bad fuel gotta clean the carbs.
You can do light off road with a Conti TKC 80 (fits on the rims).
Air filter: I recommand K&N. Washable.
Deposit: there´s no after market for bigger deposits, form a U-shape out of aluminium, drill and fix it to the rear foot peg(s). An additional plastic jerry can 10l will provide you for 500-600 km

Good bike!
I did West Africa last autumn with a offroad modified Diversion -96, se bike pictures on http://www.xs4all.nl/~kimkodde/ydcn.html and then click on "Bike Pictures" and then "Yamaha Diversion Offroad".
The bike is good but the suspension is not, rear chock absorber has to be changed and preferably with longer stroke. Fork oil SAE15 or 20 with some ml of Slick50 for less internal friction and a harder spring.

I have spent a few weeks on a XJ 900 with quite a few 300+ mile days. It is an excellent bike but for one thing and that is the screen, I found it to be absolutely useless One particularly bad day resulted in a three week old visor being reduced to scrap and having to stop every 10 mile or so to clean the visor. On another day in freezing fog the visor was completely frozen and I had to ride with the visor lifted and the wind was just being channelled into my face.
I don't mean this to sound like an anti XJ900 rant, I would buy one tomorrow but wouldn't use it until I changed the screen.
