If you are going to buy a chinese bike then make sure to buy a common model. To be honest I don't think you'll have many problems if the roads are good but when you start hitting potholes or rough terrain then the chinese bikes just fall apart.

Im very new to bikes altogether. Im not too keen on a dirt typr bike, altho i accept the roads can be pretty bad. My plan is to fly into and buy in santiago then...USH>RIO>LA PAZ>MANAUS>CARACAS>QUITO>SAN. Ive set aside £10K ($15k) which includes flights and bike. My plan is too take at least a year. |
You might want to include a bit of additional money in your plan unless you're both frugal and lucky.
As far as the bike, my limited direct experience with Chinese bikes is that yes, they start to fall apart quickly--even the ones known to be most reliable. If you like to tinker and mess around (and if you've got the skills), by all means be my guest. I've got neither the aptitude, the desire nor the skillset. Hope that helps. Mark |
$15,000 for a year, including flight and bike might be pushing it a bit. I ran into someone who went from Quebec to Ushuaia and back and he claimed that "he hadn't broken $20,000 yet", after almost one year on the road. I'm not sure exactly how much he spent but $15,000 seems inadequate. But to each his own. I'm sure there are ways to do it very cheaply. I simply like some creature comforts and a few beers.

It could well do the trip, but...
If you are prepared to spend $1000 on a new bike, I'd say call around dealers, to see what there is second hand for that price. I'd say that an older bike from one of the Japanese companies (regardless which style you choose) would probably be a safer bet in terms of reliability than a new Chinese re-hash built with probably less quality control than my Ural!! Models like the CB or CM250, a late GN250, even bigger Dual Sport bikes: DR 350 perhaps... even a C90!! Plus a chinese bike would be worth next to nothing at the end of the trip, where as one of the bikes mentioned above could well fetch a healthy share of what you shelled out to buy it... |
