Ural Solo sT

URAL is now offering a non-sidecar motorcycle, the Ural Solo sT. Its base price is USD $7,799.

I do not own a URAL, but they fall into an odd romantic class for me, that keeps me coming back and looking. Is this model, decked out for world touring, the one that makes me hand over my cash?

For me, its main competitor is the Royal Enfield. Smaller engine (500 vs 750) and almost double the gas milage. There are two sidecar URAL owners in my area. I love the bike, but I dislike the riding technique with a sidecar.

Are there URAL owners out there riding without a sidecar? What do you have to say?

Cheers,
Fabini

Hi,

Maybe this link can help.

Mr. Cob, Tours the USA on a "Ural Solo Bike" - ADVrider

Google Soviet Steeds and check out the hacks section of the OTHER long distance bike riders site. There are various threads about why you should or should not get one. Urals have an extremely loyal fan base which I'm afraid often fails to realise how the rest of the world works and will try to convert everyone. Will you for example be happy with 1500 mle oil change intervals? Keep a clear head and decide if the numbers really do meet your needs.

The only difference with the solo bikes is the final drive ratio and the blocked off reverse gear in some markets.

The dealer you buy from is an important decision. Even more so than Enfields (I've had both in my time) the dealer needs to basically rebuild the bike if it's a bad one from the factory. Ural US have a good reputation as do two of the UK dealers. Ural Canada and some of the ex-UK sellers simply didn't understand these are not like Japanese bikes and sold garbage as a result.

Personally, I'd ride an Enfield in the UK or India tomorrow but would need a lot of convincing about Urals. I now own neither as 50 mph, non-motorway capable and servicing on the sort of miles you can do in a week doesn't work for me.
