Which should I sell ? 1997 XRV750 Africa Twin or 2006 R1200GS - I can only keep one.

I've got to filter down my fleet from eight to two bikes due to moving house and possibly overseas move. My R45, VFR800, NX650 and GSXR1000 are already gone this last few weeks.

I've decided to keep one road/touring bike and one proper off-road bike (DRZ400).

So I have to decide between these two bikes.

750 Africa Twin : I have ploughed A LOT of time and money into this bike . Powder coated frame, engine rebuilt, suspension replaced, seat modded etc. I will NEVER get back my investment. It owes me £5000 and it's probably worth £3000 as It has tatty fairings and 80,000 miles which will keep the re-sale value low. Even though its mechanically SUPURB. Better than most. It's also a bike that you know you could take around the world, fix easily and not worry about. And with some courage, it can handle rough roads and trails. It is also a bike that looks awesome and has a lot of character.

However, 'Two up' it's not great. As a couple, we struggle. It doesn't have a lot of power and you can't call it exciting. It's a plodder. It's not as smooth and comfortable as the GS it doesn't have ABS. But it does return 55-60 mpg with a 23l tank. A good old fashioned 90's monster traily.

My 1200GS: I got it for a great price. It's almost mint. I'll make money on it for sure. It has all the GSA gear on a GS chassis. A perfect combo. It's a wonderful two up bike and just soaks up the miles. It's safe, comfortable and it's reliable (For a GS). It's definitely the most 'salable'. On paper, it's probably the best bike to have in the garage as a 'Do all' The wife loves it on the back and we've been all over the UK on it. However, it doesn't excite. It's an oilhead GS. Devoid of soul. And they're bloody everywhere. It will never turn heads like the Africa Twin.

What would you keep ??

Keep the AT, you will have no problem replacing the GS if you want to and good luck with your potential move.

Yebut then he ends up with a DRZ and a big clunky DRZ

I'm not a BMW fan, nor am I married, so I would keep the AT, but from what I understand from my friends "Happy wife, happy life" The couple that travels together stays together :-)

True...

1200GS's aren't exactly rare.

Good Africa twins are though. And why make a loss on a good one after spending all that money.

My DRZ is sweet. It's got a 440 kit, FCR39 pumper carb, hot cams. It's a very capable bike indeed.

1200GS now for sale ;)

I would keep the Africa Twin for what it's worth.
I have a super tenere, and if I didn't have that it'd be an AT I'd get.

As you have stated, the GS is a better bike for your needs but the AT has your heart.
As you have also stated , there are loads of GSs around and once (if) you’re settled it’ll be easy to pick up another. The AT is becoming a classic and will be harder to replace.
