PD or BA-BA

This upcoming 'PD', or should we say 'BA to BA' in 2009 will be a whole different animal than what we have known. I would love to hear more about exactly where it will take place. If they try to keep to a "no roads" style competition, I imagine a good part of it will be up in the north of Argentina (the chaco) where you can virtually make your own path. Even the river crossings are shallow. Then they are going to go into Chile somehow, my guess would be that they would take the pass west of Salta (not Paso de Jama), then get to the other side of the Andes and do some dune racing along the coast in northern Chile. they will stay away from the Cordoba, Argentina area as they don't want to duplicate the WRC. And the greenies will NEVER let them near Patagonia. I don't think they want to race too close to Santiago, and then somehow they have to get back to BA... but through where??? There has been a HUGE Sand Rail/Buggy culture in S. California for 40 years or more. Started with VW converted bugs, and went up from there. Now most places for them to ride near the City (Lost Angeles) are closed.
So you see some great, cheap deals on all kinds of buggies and sand rails, some of which are truly amazing vehicles. Nothing like a Quad really. Some of these things are Trick. Reliable, stable, FAST, not four wheel drive (you don't need it), carry luggage, cooler and a passenger side by side. Seat belts, roll cage, big tires, beautiful wheels, trick suspension. You still see them in Baja. |

Here's another option you could consider. It's the Polaris Rzr, a so-called side by side quad, but at a mere 50 inches wide it should go most places a quad or bike could.
The one thing that does need checking would be whether you can drive on the road. I know you can in Europe if it's got European homologation, and it appears Russian, the Stans, Mongolia are fine on them too, but the Americas? NA, seems to vary from state to state, but SA? |

don't ask motobike drivers how to drive a quad!!!!! how are your considerations now? of course you can make a bigger trip with a quadbike 2x4 or 4x4. look at ATV-Abenteuer a couple of people have done long distance trips and more and more will do it. it' not more dangerous than driving a bike, it's a different driving and you have to know how to do it! after a driving day i am more relaxed than the same trip went by bike (i made bike journeys through the sahara) and you can get a higher distance because a quad can carry more than a bike! you can manipulate a quad better than a side by side or buggy. |
