DT125 in the DR?
I'm used to a 225cc four-stroke, and a 650 was my ride for a while, but now that I'm going to visit the Dominican Republic, all that's available is a Yamaha DT125 stroker.
Am I in for a heap of trouble as far as distance touring goes? I have NO experience with 2-strokes so I don't know about mileage or reliability issues, etc. I hear they are rugged machines though, and any backwater mechanic can fix them. Anyone have experience here? ------------------ |
Hi Emil
You can put your mind at rest as the dt 125 is a good reliable bike. You dont say if you will buy new or second hand, as buying other peoples handywork is always a worry. However the 125 2 stroke is very cheap to get running well again (compared to a modern 4 stroke). The limitations are with lugage as 10kg is about the limit before the frame and handling suffer. Just keep the 2 stroke oil filled up and let the bike take you places a bigger bike would never let you go. During 18000km around africa, my suzuki 125, hasnt failed me yet, and the engine is still un worked on, so enjoy. andy |
