CRF500L travel bike...

So, its been done before and I thought what a great basis for a travel bike it would make. I stuffed a CB500F engine into a CRF250L chassis, twin cans and a Ohlins shocker. It has bog standard 250L looks at first glance which is fine for now while I bed her in and get to grips with it. My intensions were to build a 50/50 dual sport machine with some overlanding potential as that engine is perfect for such a mission..!!

good job , Honda wont make it as it competes with there own and the accountants and bean counters won't allow it.

What a great job. Pity the manufactureres wont take notice and build similar.

Ok, i bit the bullet and gave the nod to my fab man while away with work and came back to this two weeks later, flippin well chuffed I is..!! @7.6 litres and the new Chinese 12.5 litre main tank should get me somewhere near the mark... Fuel will use gravity and syphon to feed main tank via the breather, job done.

This bike is living up to all pre build reviews by former builders, i'm loving it to bits. Now it's getting the overlanding touch with a custom rear rack and side plates to take some Kreiga OS32's and also some custom made engine case protectors...!!

Just back from MiniMondo trip to the Pyrenee's and the rear fuel tank totally worked proving gravity and syphon effect, well stoked...!!! Sorry you'll have to tilt your screen, sideways issue again...…..

So, I actually got round to weighing the bike yesterday and she came in surprisingly over what I anticipated at 180kg's. With around 2 gallons in the tank, Kreiga pannier base plates and brackets and not to forget the rear fuel tank which was empty. It has the Ohlins adventure shock and an extra front spring kit from racetech as well, twin exhaust and the mirrors attached. The other builders are claiming less weight which might be the case but I've gone for the overlanding aspect what with the luggage and whatnot....
Regardless, I'm perched ready to commit to doing the TCAT next year if my work life comes good over this winter. Tally Ho …!!! |
That weight is not too bad considering you have quite a bit of stuff on the bike.
For comparison I weighed my Yamaha Tenere 660 with panniers and a dry bag with some stuff in (but not nearly all I had when travelling) and the gas tank was almost empty and it came to 276 kilograms. With full panniers, full gas tank and all the stuff I had when travelling it would have been ~ 300 kilos. So your Crf with 500 cc engine is still a festherweight compared to my Ten. |
