CCMs worth the cash?

Has anyone any views on CCM bikes?

The 604 looks like a well screwed together XT alike, having a single pot, air cooled, 4 stroke and that. They done good a coupla years ago on the Dakar, but no one seems to mention them here.

Surely they'd be nice fit for a person who wants to support british industry, who doesn't like the look of a tiger (too big, too top heavy, too much plaggy, liquid cooled, 2 cams, 3 cylinders etc), but would go for a Yam if they were British.

Or am I gonna have to add to the rest of the cool Japanese stuff I already own, because our industry can't hack it?

John.
I rode in South America with a guy on a CCM. It was great in the dirt but not very fun for the paved roads. It would depend on what you plan to do with it. The bike held up well on the 8,000 km trip, his only bitch was the size of the fuel tank, his range was about 200 km. Nice pricey goodies that are not available in the middle of nowhere. A honda xr400 you could get parts anywhere even Britian :-} I understand your national pride but don't let it get in the way of a sound decision based on what your needs really are.

Hi John

Why not have a go on one of the CCM factory rideouts? They do off-road and super-moto days. I did the super-moto at Three Sisters (Wigan) for around £100, an absolute hoot! If you buy one I think you get your money back too.

Cheers guys,

Well the plan is to follow my mate's Landy down west Africa at the end of next year, then ermm... I'll see (depends on how rich I am in a years time). I want to avoid main roads as much as possible (imagine, those who know it, how much of the UK you'd experience if you rode the length of the M1), thus the traily and Landy.

I suppose the real question was: "Initial purchase and parts availability aside, would the CCM 604 (possibly with a 20 litre tank from their Roadster or urban pursuit models) make it as far as I (and my gear once my mate has gone home) need to go, with my health and hair intact?"

A factory rideout would be a good idea. A bit like a test ride for adventurers http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. Do you know if they'd let you ruck up with all your expedition gear? http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif

Cheers

John
