Belgium to Oz - which bike?

I am a complete beginner in the world of motorbiking, but I have decided that I want to go to Oz by motorbike all the same. I have given myself 18 months from now to get the bike, get a licence and sort all the other stuff out. SO... if you were trying this trip (taking say 3-4 months do do it), which will include some off-roading, which bike would you take??

I will have maybe a years motorcycling experience before I leave, and my budget for the bike would probably not top £2000. So I would be looking for second-hand, and simple to maintain and obviously it can't be too rare since spare parts will become an issue in places like Iran and Pakistan I should imagine!

Any and all hints and tips would be most appreciated. Cheers.

You may want to consider the Yamaha XT600E. In fact, a new one is within £3-£3.5k, as it is being discontinued.

This bike is very simple and well known off the beaten track.

I'd advise you to test ride one for a while, though, as off-roaders can be agony for many to ride beyond half an hour in the saddle! ( You should be able to overcome this with a bit of mucking about, though ).

Otherwise, there is the Suzuki GS500E, which is again very simple and robust. You'd be wise to strengthen the forks and rear suspension units, however.

Think the Yam may well suit your budget and expectations.

hiya, one other point, not on the bike though, 3/4 months europe to oz is do able but pretty quick if you wanna see plenty of stuff on the way... apart from armco barriers that is... if you can increase the time i think you would enjoy the trip alot more and see alot more of the countries on the way.

Anyway, best of luck and have a good trip.

William
