91 XT600 or 88 Tenere

Hi there and thanks for reading

I just bought a XT600 91 model about 1 month ago. It has been about 30 years since I have owned a dirt bike and I love it.

I was looking at getting a long range fuel tank for the bike and while searching I found a 1988 Tenere for sale which already has the long range tank.

The long range tank by itself isn't enough for me to buy the bike, but it also has engine crash bars and sump guard. If I was to add these parts to my 91 model it would probably run me close to $1000. So this is making the Tenere seem more affordable.

Does anyone know of any other differences that I should be aware of, or maybe any known faults that the 1988 Tenere may have.

If I sell my 91 model I should get most of my money back and the 88 model is eligible for cheaper rego saving me about $400 a year.

After a few years I'd be making money. Maybe not.

Thanks for your time and thoughts
Scott

Tenere

The 1VJ Tenere model (86 or 88 I think) has a fault with the head bolts not going deep enough into the cylinder causing head gasket failure. Just the 1VJ model.

The 1VJ is known for overheating the head due to the shape of the fuel tank causing a lack of cooling . Every bike that still runs after 30 years is worn or rebuild. Basically if you want to ride a 30 year old bike you'll have to professionally rebuild it yourself to be trustworthy.

So its a 3AJ (twin headlight model?) fifth gear wears out but that's the riders fault not the bikes, guys ride the torque & wears the gear face, easy to tell if its knackered by riding it & paying attention to a whine in top gear.

A common mod for this model is to add a kick start just incase your battery dies on you.
