2013 or 2010 XT660Z Tenere?

Hi All

I am planning for a solo Australia - Europe trip through SE Asia, India etc. I have been weighing up the KLR650, the GS650 Sertao and the XT660Z Tenere, as I would like to be able to do both on and off-road.

I test rode a 2013 Tenere and liked it, and have found a demo-sale for $13,000 AUD. I did however find a 2010 Tenere with 23,500km and with aluminium panniers and rack etc for $8500 AUD (plus I think I could talk him down). Bike appears to be in good order, a couple of small scrapes and scratches, but nothing too drastic at first glance.

I'm trying to figure out whether it's worth the extra $4-5k for brand new, or if I could purchase the 2010 with confidence. How many kms would one expect out of a Tenere before any serious issues would begin to appear and what would I be looking at getting replaced (engine-wise) on the 2nd hand bike to ensure I am mechanically sound before heading off

All comments appreciated

Cheers for the heads up mate, I'll be doing some snooping about around there I reckon. Early impression seems to be that the engines are fairly bulletproof, I'm finding cases of 200,000km+ out there. Hopefully I wouldn't need to replace many parts on this 2010 to ensure that it's sound though

buying a 2011 xt660z

with 15000km on the clock.

What should I check in this bike?
My intention is to commute, use it during weekends and arrange a once a year a 40-45 day trip with it (eventually 2-up)

Feel free to suggest!

Mate if the 23K bike is set up and in good condition, that's a saving of $4500 and that's a lot of fuel and food just there!
Try looking at the XT660r as well not a "special" but still a very capable bike, that takes most of the aftermarket Z Tenere parts:thumbup1:
