steamerstimpson,
there is a new message on southern asia. a guy wants to cross china with his landcrusier. just sent him a message asking if he would like to join us and possibly take the guide in his truck. will see.
as to cambodia, we stayed in there for 1 month before we got to thailand and did several visa runs since then...
a 250cc is perfectly alright I'd say. we hardly hit the 100 on the road anyway.
my suggestion to china: lets try to find some more people who have the same problem and make a group tour together...
I hope the landcruiser guy is going to agree to take the guide in his 4WD.
cheers

Lao to Europe

As I understand it Vietnam is very difficult on any bike over 125cc , if its your own bike and not vietnamese registered. Lao on the other hand is relativly easy and shares a border with Thailand and China. I have been up near the Chinese border in Lao but didn't make it to the border post. I was told the Lao China border is used to move " stolen Thai pick up trucks" into China. I would seriously consider trying to enter China from Lao..As I understand it once in China and away from the border and large cities no one cares about papers, drivers licences etc. If the story about stolen trucks is only half true it sounds like there are some flexible arrangements and or people that can sort things around this crossing. Lao is a lovely country its people very very friendly it has to be worth a look.

Regards Jimmy

I agree, and if you're coming up from Malaysia, taking the trip to the north of Thailand, then around that Northern border and down to the border with Cambodia, thru Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, down to Phnom Penh then up through Rattanakiri into Southern Laos and travelling the whole 1,500km south north roue to the Chinese border would be a fantastic trip.

Why even worry about Vietnam? :cool4:
