Vietnam driving licence
 

Hi what are most of you doing regarding driving licence for riding a 125 in Vietnam ? I see next year international licences can be used but I start my trip the beginning of December options please

I have ridden in Vietnam many times and never had any problems from the Police. They don't seem to care.

Like most things in that part of the world if you was to get stopped a small bribe makes things go away.

I rode around there for a month and never had a problem. I had a idp to pull out if asked for but was never asked for it. Bugger getting a Vietnamese license, not necessary.

Just got back from Vietnam after a month long ride right around the country. Got pulled twice for speeding but got away with a smile and a handshake! Never once got asked for a driving licence although I do as a matter of course always have an IDP with me. bier

Really good to hear that some people are finally getting into Vietnam on bikes.

Anyone done it in a foreign-registered car though?

Which border is the easiest/most likely to be successful!?

I have been told in the last week by a UK run Vietnam tour company that international licences are now recognised in Vietnam!:scooter::scooter::scooter:

That's great news as heading there in a month. Is there a preferred route in? Cambodia, Laos?

not sure about routes - I am looking myself. I think Laos is easier in terms of customs if you are on your own bike. I have found the people in the know are the bike tour companies - ask them on the sly.

Returned to Oz 1/1/15 after another six weeks in South Vietnam.
In Vung Tau: Vietnamese licence had expired so off to motor transport office to renew. That only required six 44kl round trips to the MTO,a FULL medical check(8 hours at the hospital),with a reduction in the licence from car/bike to bike only.

The final result after three weeks of BS and waiting, I now have a motorcycle licence good until 12/17 and the word from the "man" upstairs at the Ba Ria MTO that International licence/permits became legal in VN from 1/12/14 doh
It is unusual for a foreigner riding in Vietnam to be hassled by the police but anything can and does happen. I have been "fined" many times.Where back in the day 40,000VND was the usual fee, the last, south of Saigon just before Tet 2014,was 600,000vnd.That was for 53kph in a 50 zone and crossing into the bus/truck lane while overtaking a slow vehicle.
Tet being only days away would explain that donation.
I have seen tourist bikes impounded for the rider not having the registration certificate. Others temporally held while the rider(or pillion)was sent off to collect funds.As in all things Vietnamese it will depend on the mood/attitude of the officer on that particular day.
If you have an accident anything from a formal apology to the victim to the exchange of lots of money,or a combination of both is possible. Most likely you will be held responsible even if the accident was not your doing.
