The Stilwell Road

I'm currently reading the very interesting account of the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition. A bunch of six English students drove two Land Rovers from London to Singapore and back in 1956.

It appears that they were the only civilian vehicles to ever traverse the Stilwell Road since the war. It was barely passable then, 12 years after it had been abandoned.

In search of more info on the web about the Stilwell Road (aka Ledo Road, Man-a-Mile Road, sometimes falsely called Burma Road) I stumbled about this quest of one man, who set out to (illegally) traverse it on foot: http://outside.away.com/outside/feat...0_burma_1.html

After reading his gripping account we are now reconsidering whether we want to even try to cross Myanmar (by another road). It appears that we would be attempting to cross one of the world's largest concentration camps.

Salut from Southern France, the bikers' paradise,

Peter.
