Ride to Tibet from Nepal?

I'm now in Katmandu and trying to figure a way to enter Tibet. According to locals, two riders did it last year but no one is sure how they got prmission.
The plan would be to airfreight from Llasha to Bangkok or ride down to Chengdu and try it from there. How cazy is this?
Thanks
Glen

G'Day,

approx. 2800k's from Lhasa to Chengdu on the old Tibetan highway with very rough conditions and lots of landslides.

the old Tibetan Highway going directly from Lhasa down to Chengdu is off limits to foreigners, PRC military areas and would not advise going that route.

only safe way is from Lhasa to Golmud, Lanzhou and down to Chengdu (roughly 4500k's).

Best Regards, Seeya in the pub or on the road somewhere.....

Hi Glen,
Maybe they are talking about the guys on the bottom of this page:

This place "Sacred Summits" supposedly got the paperwork for them.

Its a while ago now, but I was kicked off a bus at Litang trying to go from Chengdu to Lhasa in 98. Its a pretty wild road with lots of "dong feng" blue litering the valley floors. If you do get in the monasteries around Litang are great.
cheers

We have recently returned from a trip into Tibet (as far as Lhasa) by bike, starting and finishing in Nepal. We were hoping to keep going into China but were told there was no way we could get through and leave by another boarder crossing.

We did all our organisation through Sacred Summits in Kathmandu. We had to hire a guide and car, but they generally left us to ourselves except for at the checkposts.

It works out pretty expensive, but we thought it was worth it. A mind-blowing, awe inspiring ride - amazing scenery, fantastic people, challenging roads!
