Renting Bikes in Asia, what to do and what not
 

Here is where you'll find out what the bike shops won't tell you ;)

Check the bike thoroughly and take extensive pictures
Do not leave cash deposits.
Repair the bike if needed, before you return it, that way you only pay local prices for parts and labour. Some make more on repairs than they do on rentals.
If short term renting check fuel level, you may be asked to return it full
Do wear a helmet. In spite of what the locals do, it is illegal and you will open yourself to police corruption.

Do you have any scam stories when renting ? Any tips?

My Son returned from Phukett and had rented a scooter for his time there.
One day he returned to the scooter and found that his helmet had gone.
As he was going back to his training camp the Police pulled him over for not having a helmet, fine $50.:thumbdown: to be payed at the police station, noticed that a lot of tourists were being fined.
Went to his training camp and ask the trainers what the locals do as the Police had his driving licence and he could only get it back when he payed the fine.
Told to go back to the policeman that had his licence and ask if there could be an be arrangement.
Told by the Officer to go to the station get some sort of pamphlet and return.
He then showed the officer that he only had $6 dollars in his wallet.
This then went into the pamphlet and given to the officer and he then got his licence back.:thumbup1:
The locals told him that when the police had a blitz on helmets, those with out one, will take the helmets off the other scooters, so you just do the same.
