When I did the KKH I was alone and I smashed my back wheel to bits 50km before Chilas, the police hadn't bothered to give me an escort but a truck driver took me the 50 km (it took 6 hours) to Chilas for free and helped persuade (alot of shouting in Urdu) the mechanics there who were refusing to fix my wheel that they really should do it. An hour later it was fixed (and it lasted all the way to Tblisi).

The truck driver didn't speak any English but told me that we couldn't leave the KKH and drive up the hill to Chilas City (much bigger than the little village on the highway) because of Taliban, through a series of rather amusing hand signals and mimes.

I was there about 10 days before the massicar in Fairy Meadows, security was super relaxed. I had an escort for probably a maximum of 35 kms over the four days although I had about 10 men with AK74's and video cameras hanging around my hotel door one night. It turned out there was an Army Col. in the room next to me. Hence the miniature milltia (body guards).

Pakistan has the amazing ability, despite how many guns you see all over the place, to make you feel very welcome and safe.

Its up to you, but I think statistically London is still more dangerous...
