Nepal-India boarder carnet
 

Hi
I am one of three riders on UK registered ktm 990s bumbling around the world.
We have been doing 2 trips a year each time about 2-3 weeks in length, This has been going on for several years now. Back in October we crossed China and left the bikes in Kathmandu. Until now we have not needed a carnet or any other bike documents except for the V5, we have just been turning up at the borders and muddling our way through.
Our next trip will be into India, from what I have read it appears a carnet is essential and it has to be obtained in the country of registration, is this the case? or can we get a carnet or equivalent document on the border.
If anyone has any experience of Nepal to India crossing it would be great to hear from you.

Pretty sure you should have had a carnet for Nepal...
UK riders have to get them from the RAC http://www.rac.co.uk/travel/driving-...net-de-passage there are posts on here about the high costs involved for UK citizens, but for the moment there's no way round it.

We actually got into Nepal without a carnet, we just told the border guard we did not need one, we even filled out the registry book for him, and he let us straight in. Not sure if they will let us out again though...time will tell..and its all part of the fun.
India could be more difficult, and getting the carnet for 3 bikes is going to cost 12k and take 6 weeks. Im trying to find out if there is a way in if we just turn up. possibly leave a deposit with customs. As we did for one bike when entering Russia (complicated story).
