MidHill Highway Nepal

Hello,
Has anyone ridden any sections of this at all. Paved, unpaved, passable? I’m a cyclist! Not on a motorbike and have ridden in Nepal on a few previous trips and met lots of people riding EnfieldS about so was hoping someone may have experience of this,
Thanks

Hi Greg and welcome,
There are not too many cycle tourists on this forum, I am about the only one and an occasional one at that, I usually ride something with an engine. I have cycled and motorcycled in Nepal but had not heard of this road but hopefully someone will be along who knows something.
If you don't have any luck here try the Thorn tree, they are pretty helpful towards cyclist just don't don't ask any motorcycling questions there, they get a bit funny about it.
If you do find out something elsewhere could you post it up here? I would be interested.

Hello Mark, thanks for the reply. I’ve found out a bit of information mainly it’s not finished, big sections under construction which in my experience from Nepal is not much fun and the bits that are rideable are very busy and probably best avoided. Doesn’t sound like much of a fun trip. However I am glad I’ve found this forum as some great trips going on to keep lockdown entertainment on the go. Maybe as I’m 50 this year I should learn to ride a bike with a engine and give the legs a rest. Stay safe, have fun.

Hello Pushbike Greg.
Never had an engine on my 2 wheeler ( no way :-) ), I will soon be turning 52 and I have been using this site for years.
Plenty of very nice folks here, welcome !
Contributions will probably be far and few in between for the next few months as most if not all of us are grounded, but there is plenty of material in old posts to keep you busy for weeks.

hi Pushbike Greg,
I am glad somebody asked about the midhill highway in Nepal. As you may know it is under construction and most of them are motorable. It spans appx 1000 miles from east to west. I have been travelling on those roads frequently on a 4WD and Motorbike tours as well. Its totally amazing track but as you are riding a cycle it may be rather uneasy to ride because of the off beat track, Nevertheless, you will reach the places where very few tourist have reached. You will be surprised to see villages that has stood against time. For Example Taksera village in East Rukum (google Ps) and there are plenty more.
Have a nice Day.
:)

Greg,

I have ridden a motorcycle on the western half of the Midhill highway half a dozen times. It's a great route, but has a considerable amount of construction. Five years ago sections of it were extremely rough and narrow. Now many sections are wide, paved, and smooth. You should know, it does get a lot of traffic in some areas. I think as a bicycle route it's better than most in Nepal. As Nims said above, it will allow great access to amazing places off the main road, but you will certainly have to work for those mini side adventures. Even on a motorcycle, it's not uncommon for us to ride "over a hill" that takes us 2-3 hours...with a motor.

Christophe
