Yes and no. Shipping from East Timor to Australia is typically the cheapest and quickest way to ship to Darwin. However with the current problems in East Timor, the border between East and West Timor has been closed, thereby preventing entry into East Timor.

An alternative is to ship from Kupang, West Timor to Darwin on a once a month (approx) boat. See the shipping pages for information on this.

You can also ship by air from Bali, but its pretty expensive, figure $800-$1000usd for the bike + passenger tickets.

Good luck.

shipping to Oz from Indonesia

Hi
I am just about to ride down to East Timor to ship with Perkins to Darwin. The border is open at present. Will be able to give details at the end of December when I've done it.

Hi Linda, just a word of caution for you. When I was in West Timor in July, the border was officially open, but the Indonesian military was not letting anyone cross. So it was effectively closed. Hopefully by now the border will be getting back to normal and you will be able to reach Dili.

As an alternative there is Bob's boat from Kupang, West Timor to Darwin, which is very easy also, although it runs on an irregular schedule and you will have to coordinate with the length of your visa. Check out the shipping page for more info on this.

Let us know what you end up doing and good luck!

I crossed the border from East to West on October 17th. Dead straight forward, but took about two hours.

Dili could be quite dangerous if the situation changes, which it does often. But it's easy to stay safe if you use your eyes and brain.

All the best
