How to cross with motorcycle to Vietnam

Hello everybody. We are a couple traveling from Spain to Vietnam in motorcycle. In this moment we are in Laos. someone knows how to cross the Vietnam border or have information about? If you know other people that have crossed in the last years, the contact can be very helpful.

Thank you ;)

Diana and Javier.

Getting foreign bikes into VN used to be a big problem. Then a couple years back, there were several reports of bikers succeeding in this, and AFAIK, they had all used the same border crossing point (can´t remember the names on Lao/VN sides, but apparently it was almost directly east from Vientiane)...... but then after that, there have also been claims, that this is no longer possible. I have no idea, what exactly is the situation right now, but for me, it always did appear a bit strange, why it would only be possible on one crossing point only. Were they just misinformed for some time at that one crossing point?

I tried to get into VN several times on a 115cc scooter 8 years ago, did not succeed, but did get very, very close a few times. It is Asia, so anything can happen, if it happens to be your lucky day! Unfortunately that is not something you can count on....

I got to Vietnam from Laos around 1,5 years ago.
I took the road #12 to the border.
Showed up, gave all my paperwork and carnet to them.
Few minutes later young woman comes and tells me in english that they are working with the papers.

So, I did not have any problems. I heard that around 10-15 bikes got through that year.

Hi,

Thanks for your answers. Finally we continue to Cambodia. In the vietnam embassy told us that we need a Transport Ministry permission. We wrote them but we don´t have news. When we have more information, we will write here about.

Regards!

Cross Vietnam

Hi BikerT,

Finally we didn't cross to Vietnam, for us it's very expensive. You need a permission that you can get with a travel agency or a local guide.
We know a couple that the last week crossed to Vietnam. If you want the contact, tell us and I send you a private.

Good luck!!
