How to: Buy a Royal Enfield for - 2 week trip from New Delhi to Mumbai - EXPORT to UK
 

Hello there,

I have been looking at some of the older posts as well as some of the other useful information on this site, but I would like to ask for some advice on my plan to export a bike from India to UK.:helpsmilie:



I am planning to be India for two weeks, flying into New Delhi around Feb or March… there I want to buy a Royal Enfield (VINTAGE) and ride around for 10 days in total… :scooter: maybe I will do a mini tour (5 days) to see a bit of the Himalayas and then ride back down through Jahipur to Ahmedabad (5 days).

From there I want to ship the bike back to UK (I have already found a shipping company that will do it)…and then from Ahmedabad I want to take a train to Mumbai (which I guess should take me not more than 2 days) and from there fly back to UK.

So does anyone know from experience if this plan is possible, considering also the routes and times it will take to get the correct documentation?

More specifically does anyone know where to buy a vintage royal enfield in New Delhi (that will be in good condition for such a trip), also what documents are needed and how do I go about getting them; also what are the best routes for this time of the year (I am guessing closer to Himalayas will be very cold?)

I don't know how quickly you could get any paperwork done but I would allow for delays in India. :eek3:

I came across a tatty-looking shop selling Enfields in Paharganj, New Delhi, last week. To get there, head up the Main Bazaar where all the cheap hotels are and with New Delhi train station behind you.

Go past the Vivek Hotel (and possibly others) and turn first right - the bike shop is a little way along.

There were also bikes for sale from other travelers, advertised in hotel foyers in Paharganj. E.g. 1998 & 2000 Enfields for c. 30,000 rupees so it might be worth looking there too before committing elsewhere. After all, travelers will be keen to cash in their bikes before they leave.

I was taken by this one I saw for sale in Pushkar. :)

The bullettwallas shop seems like the safest option, but the cost of their restorations seems a bit high compared to what I would pay for one if I bought it in the UK.

So instead I will try to find a private one. Are there any websites like ebay or autotrader where I can find private ads of bikes for sale in india?

Regarding documents, does anyone know when I buy it, what I will need to get as a foreigner (to buy it, ride it and export it to UK)? ...

So far i have been told that the first thing is to get, is a document signed by police to show bike has been deregistered. Not sure what other documents I will need to buy...

For insurance, it looks like I cannot get cover because i am not a resident and I do not have an indian license or bank account, ...so does anyone know what else I could do, to get some kind of cover, or if all else fails what would be the consequences of not getting insurance at all? :innocent:.


Finally, are there any additional documents I will need for exporting?

Lalli Singh seems to have a good reputation from what I gather, good luck.

What do you consider to be Vintage, that's the big question here (among other big questions :D )

1969 or earlier is deemed as Vintage and to be honest you might want to check with the dealers if they have a Vintage bike ready to ride. I have been after one and recently got hands on a 72 model after waiting for weeks and then it was in ruins and needs another month or so to be prepared.

I have though seen a few dealers in Karol Bagh with beautifully prepared Vintage Bullets but they all say that they made it on order which takes at a couple of weeks to make.

I've seen atleast 5 vintage looking bullets sitting in 2 different shops in Karol Bagh but they go upwards of 2 thousand US dollars.

I can vouch for two three vendors. Pardesi Motors, Soni Motors and Inder Motors (Lalli singh)


Once you get your hands on a Vintage, exporting will be as easy as going to the shipping guys, paying around 300 USD and handing over the keys to them. Wait for a month or so and you will have it in your garage.

I have just bought my tickets for India and Thailand ...:wave:

I will be in New Delhi on the 2nd of December for 3 days and then I will be back again in the end of February for two weeks... so hopefully I will find a good one at one of those dealers.
