Manumenen,

I did this same route, Europe to India, on a transalp.

Do everything in Turkey. There are two Honda dealers in Istanbul. I did the revisions (we call this a "service") there. Very good.

There is another big Honda dealer in Ankara - maybe more than one. But there are no big dealerships west of Ankara on your route. So I advice that you go to Ankara next.

You will NOT be able to get filters in Iran/Pakistan/India. Buy them in Turkey. Get four oil filters and a couple of air filters. That should be enough.

Manumenen, do not worry. Your Transalp is new. It will only need minor service all the way to India. Change the oil and air filters every 4,000 - 6,000 km. This is enough.

The Transalp valves do not move very much. There is no need to get them adjusted often (I hope you understand this my English here: I am talking about the valve distances).

Your next decent mechanic after Turkey is Thailand.

Any more questions, ask.

Simon

hi,
it is always worth to visit 'the doctor' in Teheran, if your passing iran. dont know his exact adress but you will find him in the motorcycle part of teheran. his famous there, if he cannot help you, nobody can there..
(ask for the doctor, or doctors alley)

I would stretch the oil change intervals to 10000 km and change the filter only every other time. Modern oils (even cheap ones) and modern engines are so much better these days. I will not carry an air filter, either: it can be cleaned sufficiently well with compressed air. I use the saved space to carry things that are more likely to break, like a clutch cable, brake pads, etc.

If you learn how to adjust valve clearances yourself you will be able to service your bike yourself and learn something about it, which will come in usefull when it breaks down and there is no mechanic around.

I might add that the Transalp is a very low stress engine that is quite tolerant to long service intervals. You should have no problem getting from Istanbul to Bangkok with minimal service. Get everything done in Turkey and you should only need an oil change or two on the way to Bangkok.

Like Simon said, Istanbul is your best bet for service and parts, you can contact the Turkey community for specifics. Ankara is very limited for parts and the dealers there have to order everything from Istanbul. If you can, have things done in Istanbul.

You should also have your tires replaced in Istanbul as well as you won't be able to find these easily along the way.

Best of luck, you have one of the most reliable overland bikes around...

as written above,
to find spare parts : your best chance will be before iran and pakistan (in turkey for example). there are no big bikes in iran/pakistan almost, if you re very lucky, you may find spares, otherwise order by the internet.

to repair : you will find usefull and quite experienced people in tehran, after it s more rare.
search on the site, for other travellers experiences of repair in tehran, there s NOURIANI Company for bmw, they can help you to find the bike district in tehran.

happy trails,
