Driving through Tibet in October/November

Hello everyone,

I would like to know if someone could advise us on the state of the roads in Tibet from mid-October to November. We want to go from Kashgar to Lhasa. Does anyone know how the roads are that way and if they are open at this time of the year? We have differing information, one saying there will be heavy snow, other people saying its ok, roads open, wheather to be expected cold, but dry and even sunny.
Has anyone done this tour at this time of the year?

Thanks a lot for all hints, help, ideas!

Atumn between Lhasa and the Nepal border

Late Oct/ early Nov 12 years ago I did a 6-day landcruiser trip from Lhasa via Everest Base Camp to Nepal. Several 5000m passes, and EBC is 5200m on the Tibetan side. No snow anywhere, below freezing at night above, say, 4000m; sunshine during the day, maybe 20 degrees in the valleys, 5° to 10° degrees on the passes and at EBC, with temperatures dropping fast towards 0° under occasional clouds or in the shadow of a montain. Snowline well above 5000m. But you are coming in from the north, so it might be different there.

I suggest asking Laura73 she is now the expert on crossing China. I'd go with the heavy snow advice. That highway??? is now probably finished ie tarmac but your going to have to go through a checkpoint at the big T and big X borders.Strong chance their not going to let you through.

Well, given that there is no independent travel permitted in Tibet and you will have to pay for a guide to accompany you at all times, it would seem reasonable that the agency you use to arrange your permits, guide etc. should be able to provide this information !
