Cars with more than 2500 cc not let into Iran

Hello everybody

We are in Bandar Abbas and have the problem of getting our car out of custom. They say there is a new rule prohibiting cars with more than 2500 cc from entering the country. Does anyone has experience with this problem?

Greetings Andreas

Hi Andreasmux. Could you keep us updated?
I had read it about Iranian vehicles, no tourist, just for locals.
But if there is a new rule about, it will be very interesting for other overlanders.

Thanks and good luck.

I am currently driving to Iran by bike, planning to enter the country in about 10 days. I also heard rumors about this concerning motorcycles and I looked around a bit and this topic on another forum covers it. Long story short: their sources also say this counts only for Iranians and should not apply to tourists.

It took 3 and a half day to get into Iran. They did something special in the costoms head Office in Teheran. Maybe it was a special case, since we shipped our car from Europe to Bandar Abbas s Rajeh container port. We had a Professional costom agent from the beginning and they were in comstant contact with their Teheran office. The contacted even ‚Iran Turism‘ the offical travel agency.

In the fist place they suggested to transport the car in the container to our exit border from Iran. That means we would have had to rent a truck with the container on top to the Turkmenistan border.

Great news for you! They finally fixed the "problem". Maybe it was some kind of paperwork mistake or misunderstanding on their part.

Thanks for update.

Regards.

I don‘t think it was a missunderstanding. It was allways clear what the problem is. They got approval from the top officals in Teheran. I don’t know if we got something like a special thing or if they created a rule how to handle this problem they created with their new rule for travellers.

Any updates on this story?

Anyone recently enter Iran with a 2500cc+ car? Any tips on which border crossing to take or paperwork to arrange beforehand to prevent issues as described by Andreas?

We'll be travelling from Holland to India. We're setting off in August and planning to enter Iran end of October either via the Azerbaijani or Armenian border.

My suspicion is that this boils down to the distinction between bringing in a car for temporary use as opposed to permanent import, and because very few people ship in by container, the guys there were not aware of the rules. Did you have a carnet de passages?

pauldelft 18 May 2018 08:19

Yes we'll be travelling with a Carnet, so not importing, just travelling through.

Safe to assume there is nothing to worry about? Can anybody who has recently entered Iran via a land border confirm?

Paul, send Hanomax a message, he crossed very recently, last month. See this topic:

But as said, I don't think the rule applies to you as temporary import for tourists.
