Border crossing Iran-Pakistan? Any update?

Hi everybody,

planning my motorbike trip from Amsterdam to Hanoi/Honk Kong/Beijing. Not sure where I will end up yet :mchappy:.

But first things first...where are we nowadays on the crossing Pakistan-subject?
Is it possible to cross the border by motorbike at Mirjaveh/Taftan? Or any border crossing?
Can you 'just' show up with an Visa, LOI and Carnet de Passage? And do you need to travel with a guide, an armed convoy or just by yourself?

Any recent and (first hand) experiences?

Looking forward to any replies!

Thanks!

Roland

Only Mirjaveh / Taftan.
Visa and carnet required (check the new e-visa procedure).
No guide required.
Police escorts will be organised for you on the spot (free of charge).

Thanks!

Hi EO,

Thanks for the quick reply. This is certainly good news!
Will the police escorts you all the way through Pakistan? Or are you set 'free' somewhere halfway?

If not, do you know to which exit point/ border crossing they guard you to?

And would it possible to 'explore freely' the Gilgit- Baltistan area?

I did check your website. You did quite some traveling in the area. :thumbup1: When was your last visit to Pakistan?

Thanks again for you help.

Greetings,

Roland

Hi Roland

Thanks for checking the website, indeed Pakistan was a big focus in my trip and I was able to travel almost everywhere without a guide. I have not been in Pakistan since 2009 which was just before the police escorts were more regularly given to tourists.

From the accounts that I read, it seems the escorts stay with you at least until you reach the National Highway (NH5), or maybe until you reach Punjab.

For more up to date experiences, I would recommend the FB group 'Overlanding Asia

I hope you get to enjoy Pakistan,

EO

Hi,

I'm currently in Pakistan with my car. From Wagah northwards we have been free to do anything we like. In Gilgit Baltistan we haven't even been stopped at a checkpoint, total freedom in perhaps the most amazing place I have ever been.

We have done lots of camping, locals give us our space and are very friendly.

When we head down to Taftan, we will pick up an armed convoy from Multan and will be very restricted through to Quetta and down to Taftan through Balochistan.

But the north is where you want to be free to roam, and that is what you will get.

Joss
