Bike in Laos without import docs - problem?

A few days ago we entered Laos from China. At the Lao border we asked for customs, but where just waved through. I have read on GT-Rider.com that this may be a problem, but one poster wrote that he left Lao without docs.

Can anybody shed any light on this?

Thanks,
Peter.

Hi mate love your site, Right don't worry too much about it now the damaage is already done, if need be say you didn't know the Laoatians are pretty cool and laid back. If need be pay a little tea money but as long as you are riding in on bikes that are from abroad they don't really care too much.

Word of caution, don't ever repeat what you have just did in any of the other countries because Thailand WILL impound your bike, Cambodia WILL fine the hell out of you and Malayasia WILL not let you out again.

So just stay chilled at the next border and remember to smile a lot and get the customs guys to pose for some pictures with your ride, make a big fuss of them, maybe have some beers in your pannies, basically anything to defuse tensions.

Thanks for the hints. In the end the missing docs were a non-issue. Crossing the bridge was another story...

For the Love of Allah, what do you mean the advise worked I wanted you to get arrested and your butt thrown in a S/E Asian jail for the next 20 years.

Naw glad to see it helped so let us in to the story then, as it might help some other poor soul on here.

The story is here: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...567#post163183

Surprised you didn't see it. As I said, papers were a complete non-issue.

I drove into laos and out again without anyone asking about my bike. Just park it a bit away from the border office (out of sight), do the paperwork for yourself, jump on the bike and fire away. No problem. I dont even think they care, but no reason to take chances.

Cambodia is the same
