Anyone riding in China at the moment?

Hi folks,
is anyone riding in China at the moment? If so, how was the situation with the police etc...is it heightened due to the olympics and tibet? Are you getting stopped often?
We are considering entering illegally if we can make it but have serious doubts about it.
What happens actually if you get caught driving illegally?

Finally, what about buying an old used Chinese bike in China and riding freely?

We are in Mongolia at the moment and considering our options.
Thanks

Hi nmanno, see my thread below http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ing-bike-34810

I am currently in Erenhot on the China - Mongolia border and have been knocked back trying to take my bike out of China. Strangely enough, China is an easy place to ride around illegally - the police go out of their way to help you. However, the customs officers are not so easy to deal with. Basically they have said that only bikes imported in to China can be exported (but they won't let you import in the first place - catch 22 :confused1:).

I'm presently trying to get a train to Ulan Bataar but tickets are hard to come by and I don't know exactly when I will be able to leave.

I'd like to meet with you in Ulan Bataar - how much longer will you be there for? - and discuss my experiences. I have to sell the Haobon soon anyway as my Suzuki has now arrived in Korea and I am under pressure from the shipping company to collect it soon.

Garry from Oz.
