UK Bike insurance
 

I live in Canada and plan to purchase a bikei in Britain and to keep it there for annual tours. I have had no luck with the big brokers, Carole Nash, etc.

Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

This is ongoing issue.

I have had success in the past with Bikesure, but it wasnt easy and I belive they may not do it anymore

Will be going through the whole painful process again in June.

What are the issues you are having ?

The issue is not being a permanent resident, although I have an address in Bath that I can use.

The problem it appears is that if you are less than truthful with your info, most of the insurers I have talked to will not honour any claim.

The only way I can see u pulling this off is selling the bike to a friend for say a nominal amount eg a pound. He or she becomes the registered keeper and you are then placed on the insurance as a named rider. They will then have to insure it obviously and declare that it's kept at a different address, this bit may cause an issue with some companies though. As you aren't riding it that often then you aren't pulling the stunt that alot of parents do to get their little Johnny or Mary cheap insurance first-line round. Whatever you do don't lie to get insurance, it becomes a criminal offence if the company pushes it and you will be in a world of grief. Trust me on this, the companies share info and it's an easy detection for the police stats. If u are done then you will have a conviction for fraud by false representation which will mean any UK insurance if u can still get it will be thru the roof and you may also be barred from entering the good,old US of A, if you so wished due to said conviction.

Without the UK insurance company accepting the driving licence that the rider actually has, then no insurance is valid.

In my experience with the DVLA of trying to exchange foreign licences for a UK one:

German = yes
Australian = yes
USA = no

Having done all 3 driving test, I can understand why.

You also have the option of buying the bike in Ireland and registering it there as it is possible for a non resident to do. You then can get green card insurance. There is lots of info on it on this form if you do a bit of searching. Also check out https://motofeirme.com/ all info here.

Thought I would update this thread as I have just gone through the process for my trip to the IOM next month on My mates Bike.

Lee Dyer at Bikesure has been a pleasure to deal with. Its not cheap but as far as I could tell its the only option.

I month full comprehensive incl CTP was 280 pounds.

Doesn't affect the insurance my mate already has on his DL1000 as it is completely separate. Only covers me in teh UK, so I will have source another cover ( probably from Tourinsure in Germany for my 2 weeks on the continent after the TT)
