My wife is watching so I better behave.
Anyway, yes it is a small world.
I was at Quarrydale school in Sutton, we used to thrash Joseph Whittaker at football, or so I remember, mind you I don't remember us ever losing a game, I must have blanked it out.
A mate bought an MZ from there but it fell apart after a couple of weeks and took it back so he went to Taggs in Sutton. I used to go to Richardsons in Mansfield until the old man died or left, can't remember which, many years ago.

Actualy, I expected a reaction in Dutch so you disappoint me a little :-)

By the way, is that a "real" dialect that you write there, or do you just make it up for fun ?
If I do my best, I can understand most of it but it looks very odd.

It's more of an accent than a dialect, it's the way we speak in that area but written phonetically.

If I do my best, I can understand most of it but it looks very odd.

There was a book published in tha late 70s called "Eyup me duck" all about the local dialect Derbyshire/ Nottinghamshire borders, written as it was spoken facinating and some times difficult reading.

The dialect is still widely spoken today, mainly by the older generation but great to hear.

I say to my grand daughter "artorayt" she replies "nonsabad" shes only four I wonder when she grows up will she hear her local dialect, I doubt it.

Artorayt = are you alright

Nonsabad = yes thank you

When I was in my early 20s and working in a wire producing factory almost everyone spoke in the local dialect, the factory has now gone as have the charactures that worked there, one of my favorite sayings that came from one the old boys was "owdtheefutup" translated take your time, or take your foot of the accelerator, I still use this phrase and many more like it, to this day:D

The dialect is one of the oldest forms of English and would be understood by a time traveller from the middle ages , many words are Viking in origin .
If you have seen the film Beowulf , you know the wierd animated version with Antony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie , you will have heard Grendel talking in a very similar fashion , including several words used in previous posts .
My son was very chuffed when he came back from the doctors after a blood test and informed me that the doctor said he had Viking markers in his blood .Coming from the east Midlands ,it didn't surprise me very much .But a bit of a novelty in Canada though .

Anyrode I'd best mek haste , arv gorra copy o "Eyup me Duck " somweer , mebbe in one o them bocsis darnstairs , I mun etter find it and ay a good laff .

Ar tuk me cat ter vet's , he sed "is it a Tom ?"
Ar sed "no yu daft beggar , I browt it wimme ".

Ramdom ruminations on dialects

The first Mrs MarkE was an imigrant and I thought it would be clever to learn to communicate with her parents (and know what they might be saying about me). I went out and invested in a Linguaphone course and hid the tapes in the car so I could secretly learn while commuting. After about a year I had almost completed the course and, on a good day, I could follow the satelite TV in her parent's home, but I still couldn't understand a word they said. I finally admitted defeat and admitted my subterfuge. When she finished rolling around the floor laughing at my naivity, she explained that I had learned standard Italian, and her parents spoke the old Sicilian dialect. I believe its only the older generation who use the dialect now - the children want to follow the latest soaps on Rai etc.

Nearer home. the present Mrs MarkE (better cook, less emotional and altogether better person, but with lousy taste in men, thank God) is from t' frozen north; Lancashire (she says, but the road signs say Bolton is actually Greater Manchester). Most of the time she is easily understood, but if she's been speaking to her mother any length of time I need a translator! If my mother in law is angry she is totally incomprehensible! At least I can kid myself she's not aiming at me.
