Africa - Bottom to Top - Here Goes!

Hi Travels guys, I'm new to the site but have already picked up some valuable pointers from various threads.

The planning is over and in about 2 weeks myself and kiwi friend Clive are about to ride from Cape Town to Alexandria myself on a KTM 1290 Super Adventure T and Clive on a mark 3 air cooled bmw 1200gs.

Once in Egypt we plan to ship the bikes to Istanbul and then ride home to Southwold Suffolk UK. I don't know how long this journey will take or what will happen on the way - the important thing is we are going to start - the first step is always the hardest.
I will post any interesting border crossing facts along the way and fuel availability, tyres etc.
See you on the road
Phil

Sounds great mate. Look forward to hearing more about your trip as I'm planning UK to Cape Town next year. Can I ask about the costs involved in shipping your bikes to Turkey? Will you be flying to Turkey to meet your bikes?

Hey Phil, did some of that journey in 2016. Fantastic memories. What’s your broad route plan?

I did this trip about 10 years ago leaving around the same time which worked well with the weather. I took around 5 months and was home just before Christmas, that was taking it steady with time to take in a few sights along the way.

Africa bottom to top!

Hi Guys,

we routing up Namibia and East along the Caprivi Strip to Livingstone Zambia - to see the Vic Falls. Then North East towards Lusaka up to Tunduma (the border with Tanzania). Here we plan to go north to Kigoma and come into the back of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater and Arusha. Into Kenya, Nairobi for service tyres etc and then north to Addis Abba - where we hope to get a visa for Sudan (the situation is improving) onward through Sudan (don't know the route) into Egypt and eventually Alexandria where we will use Consolidated Freight Services to ship our bike to Derince Turkey - should take a week to arrive and we will fly direct - no price yet and you have to pay in cash. Fuel in Western Cape is 86 pence a litre.
I will keep you posted!
Cheers Phil

When you leave Cape Town head up to Cederberg Oasis it’s an amazing ride. Just after you leave the 303 it’s gravel all the way. Fill up with fuel before you leave the R303 :thumbup1:

Hey Phil & Clive
I'm about to embark on the reverse from Netherlands south. Damn us Kiwi's get around!
Having a bit of a mind **** over logistics of how to get into Africa via Egypt or Saudi/Djibouti. Keep in touch with where you've been, issues/solutions.

Remain Flexible

Hi
there is a company that will ship your bike from Istanbul (Derince) to Alexandria (Egypt)
Consolidated Freight Services - you cant go with your bike bit I have spoken to the guy in Alexandria about our bikes going north bound.

Sadly we are delayed by bad weather around Cape Town - so my bike won't arrive for another week ARGH!!!!)(*&^%$
So we are doing a 4 x 4 expedition around Namibia to soak up the time and when we start properly go direct from CT to Victoria Falls via Botswana.

"Keep calm and enjoy the road - what ever happens" This is what I keep telling myself

Cheers
