Photo library

Just wondered if there was any potential for a photo library within the Hubb?
It's probably to much to administer if individuals got payed (possibly the best) but jurnalists etc. could buy the usage of the image with procedes going to the Hubb or even something to charity.

Hmm... interesting idea! :)

Anyone else, other thoughts?

There is a related/similar suggestion which has not set the world alight:-

It will be interesting to see if this suggestion gathers greater interest/support.

This is very related to the current discussion about writing for free in the UK bike mags + the situation about copyright for photos that is discussed in another thread.

Those were the threads that made me think of the idea. There must be some way of tying all this together.
I'm not computer tech literate so a little out of my depth here but I wondered with the trip reports if there was a way of setting up a trip website template in the hub format - if these were hosted by the user then there there wouldn't be bandwidth problems (well out of my depth here).
I've been using this forum for about 5 years now and still keep finding new areas.
With the photos, I think respectable publications still want to abide by the law and would be willing to pay for usage. Photography is mostly about being in the right place at the right time and, with digital technology, knowledge of the subject travelers are well placed to get some spectacular pictures. It would be nice if the pictures could, in part finance the next trip but if that is too commercial and complex to administer then perhaps 2 or 3 pictures donated to the library after a trip would put something back into this amazing resource. The Hubb's presence on the internet would I suspect give the library some gravitas. I don't know the ins and outs of all this, just that it might be an opportunity.

Stock library...

Oooooooooohhhh fun!!

I administrate a photo stock library (not bike related) - and if you set it up properly from the start, it pretty much runs itself.

We can make use of public servers, which costs pennies a month and virtually gives you unlimited bandwidth and space.

We might have to give contributors the OPTION of donating the funds to HU/charity, or keep it for themselves, although they might be disappointed...from 5 yrs experience in stock libraries, I can tell you, its NOT a meal ticket! :) You could (and should!) charge a basic admin charge on transactions anyway.

Only that you don't want to lose out on high quality stock, because people don't want to donate the proceeds. The key to getting the press interested in your library, is having the best possible stock... so you have to be as accomodating as possible.

Grant, I dont mind helping out with this - we owe a lot to HU - and we haven't even done the big trip yet! PM me.
