Last visited site query?

Hi,

Since I returned from Germany early in the New Year, whenever I visit the Bulletin Board, all of the "New Message" icons to the left are yellow & the date of my last visit to the site is given as 24/12/03 even though I had visited the previous day?

The only thing that's changed is my personal e-mail address but I've already updated my profile.

Any ideas, as I now have to check the date of every topic rather than relying on the colour of the message icon?

Thanks

Steve

I've the same problem; All the icons are yellow. :-(

I had the same problem too. I went into the Internet Explorer properties on my desktop and deleted all cookies on my system. Since then I have no icons whatsoever.

Yep, me too. I use a laptop at home and a pc at work. All the icons are yellow on both. I wouldn't mind so much, but I hate yellow!

Grant Johnson 8 Jan 2004 07:05

This is pretty weird...

BUT it was doing the same to me too! I didn't notice it, I just go to the "new posts for the day" link.

However it seems to be cured by going to the Profile link and OK'ing your profile. Worked for me.

I suspect it's to do with the cookies on your system - could be UBB software, could be IE bug, who knows. Any NON IE users notice the same symptom? Cured same way?

You may also find it worthwhile to go to "Preferences" next to profile, and delete cookies, then reset preferences.

hth...

Grant

mcdarbyfeast 8 Jan 2004 14:44

Nope, didn't work for me. Went to 'preferences' deleted 'cookies' pressed 'reset' and nothing happened. Did this a few times, but the only way to leave the page was to press 'submit preferences'

Didnt work for me either...

harryl 9 Jan 2004 02:45

I use mozilla and have the same problem.

More bad news. The following features have stopped working:

Save user name. I now have to re-type ID & pwd every time. Tried resubmitting profile, etc. like Grant suggested, no go.

In the list of today's topics some of the links send me to a topic other than the one I clicked on.

the cookie monster has done something nasty with the cookie jar (very technical explanation...) i have IE6 and no funky lightbulbs or anything.

Like beddhist I too had trouble with my profile and password a couple of times, but that was before Christmas and it has been fine since.
However when I sign into the HUBB initially the table with the list of Threads is aligned way off to the right, but once I go into any thread and come back out, it is fine.
Has Grant been paying a visit to the Twilight Zone....

All very weird...

I haven't DONE anything to the HUBB!

BUT I do know that this stuff is all kinda flaky anyway.

Here's the standard basics to supposedly clear up any problems anyone is having:

1. Do as noted above, making sure you SUBMIT Preferences, (RESET clears the page and does nothing, sorry about my phrasing - I meant Re - SET the preferences in other words 'set them'/'submit them'). Note that changing the number of days displayed to ensure it writes a new cookie is probably worthwhile.

2. If that doesn't work, DO make sure your system IS accepting cookies! All sorts of new software such as Zone Alarm, NIS, etc and paranoid types recommend blocking cookies in a misguided attempt to make the internet "safe". Cookies per se are NOT a risk. Go to your cookies folder and make sure there are recent ones there.

3. In IE, Tools / Internet Options / General, "Delete Cookies". It may even be worth "delete files", and make sure that Settings are "Check for newer versions" - "Automatically".

4. Then go back to Preferences and Re "Submit Preferences"

5. CLOSE all instances of your browser, then re-open and see if it's all ok.

Do FORCE a refresh, to ensure the cache has been cleared. (Hold down the SHIFT key, and click on Refresh or Reload.)

NO guarantees, but hopefully that will solve most peoples problems.

If anyone has been having problems for more than a month or so, let me know.

Well, Grant, that procedure of yours fixed it: I now have no more light bulbs at all, not even in the legend at the bottom, just an empty column, narrower than usual. Nothing more to complain about, except it still won't remember my ID and pw. Oh well...

Grant Johnson 10 Jan 2004 12:21

sighhhh....

Not remembering un/pw - gee I thought that was just me... because I DON'T tell it to remember me.

As for the light bulbs, do the shift refresh trick again. They should show now. I reuploaded them in order to give them a new file date, so a forced refresh should work.

Perhaps there is a bug in the software - what am I saying OF COURSE there's a bug - probably hundreds - but they haven't given us grief until now, it's been running well for years. Could be a date related bug, who knows.

We are looking at new software for the HUBB, and hope to get it in this summer.

Chris Smith 12 Jan 2004 02:49

Grant -

if it makes you feel better - all it AOK on my laptop. The bulbs are all as they should be in relation to my last visit. I have no idea if this makes any difference but I use a Apple Mac.

Oh good, that's what I wanted to hear!

At least someone has it good.

Could be the code is incompatible with Windows systems, but unlikely, since it worked in the past.

Could be a bug in IE for Windows, or who knows. But if it's working correctly somewhere, it's not the server. Whew! I'm off the hook for now. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Thanks Chris!

Sorry guys if yours isn't working correctly, I don't know what else to suggest.

beddhist 21 Jan 2004 23:34

Well, I can report that at least the disappeared bulbs have got something to do with my PC at work, as I have bulbs at home. My work PC is "secured" by the admins :-(

However, even at home all bulbs are yellow. Reload, etc. didn't make any difference.

Doesn't matter, it's the content that matters. THAT is of the highest quality!

Thanks.

The light bulbs are back and working and my login and password are now remembered.
