Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2.8 R4. Any good?
 

This is only a semi-serious question as buying another vehicle may be a bit of an extravagance even if not an expensive one.

I should say, at this point, this is not likely to be for travel, at least not far afield.

At present, any 4-wheeled travel is in a Ford Transit, with a folding bed built in behind the rear seats.

We went camping a few days ago, here on the Estonian coast, and my poor FWD van got royally stuck in the sand which required a fair bit of shovelling from me and a fair bit of shoving from my girlfriend. All the while my two daughters watched on in amazement, wondering when we'd start the BBQ.

I'm home now so we did get out, but it got me thinking about buying a somewhat older 4x4 for such trips, forest tracks and snowy winters.

I have found a Mitsubishi Pajero on sale for 3 figures but know nothing of the car, apart from the fact its name is not very polite in South America despite being marketed there...

So, what do you know about them and are they any good?

Are they unkillable like the the Hilux etc, or are they just a road car in 4x4 guise?

We own one from a year ago, a nice 2.8 TCI and automatic transmission from 1997. We bought it with just 125.000 kms and in perfect condition. Also planning for be our travel vehicle on winter here if we can´t travel to the northern hemisphere for ride a bike! The other half refuse to travel here in winter on a bike…. We managed last year to make two separate trips, totaling now with the normal use here 15.000 kms more. Unfortunately, this year about the Covid we are in forced vacations without by now the chance to hit the roads again.

Luckily here is not call “Pajero” (what means a wanker here), it’s call “Montero” and on some markets like the UK it’s call “Shogun”

Personally, I’m sure it’s a very capable 4x4, maybe a bit slow and heavy as an old BMW, but reliable as an old Honda Africa Twin, well at the end is Japanese. And I’m not planning to take it to the extreme. Back in their time, at least here was a luxury truck, with many things that only comes in others vehicles some years later. It isn’t just a road car in 4x4 guise, my has central and rear diff locks as std, also most have the Super Select transmission system what means you can drive it in 2WD H, on 4WD H (with 60% on the rear and 40% at the front), 4WD (50-50%), and in Low 4WD, also the front hubs are automatic what means you don’t need to go down to connect or disconnect it. Fuel tank are 92 liters, so you have a very long range. Maybe it’s a bit undervalued these days, but that’s good, you can buy one cheap and don’t paid what people ask for the overrated Toyotas or Land Rovers! Hehehe!

So, what else you want to know? Apart that I’m in love with mine…

Thanks for all the great advice and observations.

They seem like great cars, but now I need to decide if I can justify the expense!

(I still miss Argentina)
