12V socket issue - Triumph 800
 

Taking off on a longer trip on my new Tiger 800 XCA in early July. Was trying out all the equipment and found out that my 12V electric airpump which is equipped with a cig lighter adapter does not fit in the 12V sockets of the bike, they are simply too small. Two standards I presume. Found some adapters online but cant judge which ones will fit. Cant find online any spec of the Triumph socket. Anybody have an idea where I can get an adapter that will fit? I dont need to have it permanently installed just use it when I need to pump the tires.

DIN sockets
 

The smaller socket fitted on Triumphs is probably the DIN standard that is also installed on BMW motorcycles.
Come to think of it, that is a 99% "sure thing". KTM also fitted the DIN standard to their 990 bike.

Adaptors can be found for sale on ebay and no doubt from lots of other sources.

I had the 800 and you can get simple and cheap adapters to convert the smaller socket to a standard socket. Few things to note :

1. They are usually really cheap and nasty and easily break. If it's mission critical then make sure you can either take it apart to mend it or carry a spare !

2. If you use one on the back socket on the bike then make sure it's fixed firmly or use some string to hold it in place. The extra length of the adapter and socket can catch the wind/vibrate loose while you are riding and fall out without you noticing. (Speaking from experience)

3. Careful on the power draw on the 12v socket with the air pumps. Some of them can draw more than the fuse particularly as the tyre inflates.

Triumph use DIN.

I'd cut the cigarette socket off the compressor and buy a DIN plug on the auction site. Smaller and doesn't require a lot of jiggling to get the adapter to contact. A clean connection is less likely to blow the fuse.

Agreed it's DIN. And there's a pile of low quality stuff out there which falls apart—still have some in my garage!

DIN standard. Used on farm tractors too.
There are plugs that fit both sockets .. have not used them.

I have a plug on my pump that is standard cig lighter, then slide back plastic shroud to reveal a DIN plug as well.
Doesn't matter which bike it goes with that way :thumbup1:
