Time lapse of crating our bikes
 

Me and my friend Roberto has planned a trip for six months now.

The bikes sadly left us two weeks ago, I think they are somewhere on the Atlantic now.

We are gonna leave Sweden the 30:th to go to Santiago, Chile. Then we hope that the bikes will arrive safe and sound, so that we can go exploring... We plan to stay in Chile, Argentina and Peru for approx six months and we hope to share the journey here on HU.

Great Crate!
 

Guys -- good luck on your journey. You did a hellova job on that crate. My daughter and I are launching south in January and might just be in the same neighborhood as you two at some point. We'll keep an eye out for those two Dakars -- should make you very recognizable! My daughter is on similar bike, but not Dakar -- black 2007 gs, I'm on a yellow r1200gs -- "the mule" for this journey.

Creating a crate....
 

Saludos from Colombia, I´m in a countdown to get my trip started in Jan 15th.My 990 Adventure will be airship from Bogota to Santiago de Chile, then I´ll be looking for you guys.
I´m planning to go as far as Ushuaia, then back to Colombia, if heavens and some of you get alone with me.
In the mean time,I´ll appreciate any help to have my bike´s crate done.

South to North
 

Wow! I thought I's be all alone during January to May. I'm ait frieghting my bike to Buenos Aries December 31 then ridng to Mendoza, Santago, and Purto Montt. I'll be taking the ferry south to Purto Natalles followed by TDF and working my way north on Ruta 40. Ultimately ending up back in the United States.

Crate
 

Sooooo I have a question.

I plan on riding from Seattle Washington USA in late Feb towards S. America. Once I get down there, and Im ready to go home....how do I crate my bike and ship it home? Do I need to build a crate like that? Did you guys buy the crate and modify it, or did you actually build that whole thing from scratch?

Does anybody have any helpful advice on shipping bikes? Im on here looking right now....so excuse me if I havent found it yet.

We actually built our own crate at first but couldn't use it because of problems with the material. The wood has to be marked a certain way to show that it's been debarked and undergone a heat treatment. See ISPM 15 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia for more information.

So we went to a company, gave them all our measurments and they built our crate. We wanted the crate as small as possible to reduce the shipping cost. We will use the same crate when we ship the bikes home again.

You can probably buy a crate here in S.America but I don't have more information on that. You can also send the bike un-crated by air for example. Or there are ships that take them uncrated too. The risk for damage is greater if you send it uncrated by ship though. If I could afford it I would send the bike by air since it's easier, you avoid costs at the harbour and the hassle with a crate. And you will arrive at the same time as your bike.
