Shipping from Western Europe to Colombia (arrival beginning of september 2018)

Hi everybody,

In 2018 my girlfriend and I are going to South-America for six months.
The idea is to ship our Tenere from Western Europe (Belgium, so Antwerp, Hamburg, ...) to Colombia (Baranquilla, Cartagena?).

The bike should be there around the beginning of september as we go south and would want to take the bike back in February 2019 from Valparaiso, Chile.

Is there anyone with more or less the same ideas? We can maybe share costs, and with more we are always smarter than alone!
Some good advice is also always welcome.

We still need to contact some companies for ratings, but as we might team up with some of you, we will do this later.

For the return shipping we might do it with 'In Time Hamburg', as there seems to be no crating necessary, and the price is not too bad.

Thanks in advance!
Uldrik

Hi Uldrik,

we (m/w with two BMW F650GS) plan to travel SA starting in Cartagena in the first week of August 2018.

We would be glad to share a container with you or best a few more travellers. Yet our arrival date is already fix. This is important since everybody has to be in the place when the container is opened.

Maybe you are more flexibel? We live in Aachen at the Belgium/Netherland/Germany border. Thus all ports you mentioned would be ok for us.

Greetings

Benno

Hi guys,

As we arrive the 8th of september (also already fix) I don`t really like the idea of having the bike there for almost a month...

I have to work until the end of august.
Maybe you know somewhere safe and somebody reliable to take care of that?

Thanks for the proposal anyway :-)

Hi Uldrik,

if I unstood Olaf correctly, every owner/sender of a vehicle has to be in the place, when the container is opened. Thus, I don't see any chance to ship together.

Maybe we will meet somewhere on the road instead bier. After about 6 weeks in Colombia we plan to head south to Peru.

Thanks for your answer anyway.

Owner arrive before vehicle

When I flew my motorcycle out of Miami to Bogota, there was a slight "wrinkle" that I escaped. It seems there was some rule that the owner had to clear Immigration and Customs ahead of the vehicle. Although I was on a commercial flight versus the vehicle being on a cargo flight, my commercial flight got delayed so the arrival of me was going to be after the motorbike by some hours or a day.

I never saw the printed rule, but the Freight Forwarder in Miami was a little worried about the timing, but all worked out in the end.

Arrived, cleared Immigration and Customs, checked into hotel, and next day reported to the air cargo company. While going through the import process at air cargo Customs offices, my arrival time was looked at in my passport once for some piece of paper that went onto another desk for a stamp of approval. Seems I had arrived, even with the delay, several hours before the air cargo flight did with my vehicle.

Hi Dr. G,

thanks for your information. I guess it might be very helpful to other travellers, who send their bikes in wooden boxes either by air cargo or on a vessel.

In our case we discussed to share a container without any wooden boxes. Would make it easier to get the bikes to the harbour. In combination with a gap in arrival time of almost one month, this means that at least one bike would have to be parked somewhere in the customs area. I don't want to know, how much they charge you as a "little extra" for this service and which of the motorbike parts somebody might find useful as a souvenir during this time.

Cheers

I've got a container coming back from Montivideo in Feb 2019 and will have space if that helps.

BennoBenner 16 Apr 2018 17:33

Hi Sgt Bilco,

until now we didn't plan our return transport. Container from Montevideo sounds interesting.
When (exact date if possible) would the container be loaded in Montevideo? Where does it go to? How much would it be per bike?

Regards

Benno
