The onion boat doesn´t go anymore and Mr. Lim didnt helped us at all, still a very nice guy though! And the onion boat is still going the other direction, from Malaysia to Indo is no problem at all.

Dont forget do not ship to Jakarta or Dumai, or I guess your Bike will just maybe disapear...

Get in contact with the Goldwing Club in Jakarta, lots of members which can help. To do that its a good idea to get in contact with HTML in Jakarta, look in Facebook for HOnda Tiger Mailing List and ask them... nice guys and they maybe can help you...

As things are really constantly changing it would be nice if you could give an update on how things wend...

1) What is "paniers"?.
2) I read your mail. Thanks. I think it is no possible for my bike Gold Wing 1500 go on the ferry in Port Klang: it is bad dock. It is not possible; too dangerous.
3) And from Melaka to Dumai?

If I can not get safely, Indonesia is inaccessible for me and I jump it... if is possible.:(

RTWbyBIKE.com 6 Nov 2012 23:17

Paniers are boxes to fit you stuff in, usually left and right on the bike. Normally you can take them off, not at the Goldwing though.

The boat was safe, to get the bike on it is a different story.

"Dont forget do not ship to Jakarta or Dumai, or I guess your Bike will just maybe disapear..."
Plus there is no Boat from Melakka anymore not even a passenger one, they stopped because flying is much cheaper, ... as far as I know but this can change every minute...

Indonesia was one of the best riding countries for us... unbeliveable scenery, people and the food too... dont miss it...

good luck...

Indonesia will also be the "Paradise on Earth", but if do not allow to my bike to go, I'm not going in there. The problem is that it is not easy, technically, skip it.

Maybe what was said about Dumai meant that it can be problematic to enter the country from there. I've also heard warnings about it, but that was several years ago.

Indonesia is wonderful, well worth a visit, but getting the bike there can be a problem. With your hectic timing, I'd probably send to Australia from Kuala Lumpur.

Yes, I will do so, it is too complicated to enter Indonesia, for both the bureaucratic and mostly for the "physical", I can not sign in with my bike in some ferries were born to people (I've seen photos of the experience of RTWbyBIKE. com). :o
I am very determined in my travels, I can also deal with dirt so sure my bike was not born, but I also know the physical limits of it and not risk a fall overboard or an accident to exceed 10 steep steps with 10 Malaysian governing a bike half a ton, made almost entirely out of plastic and with a few strong holds. :nono:
If a country is not quite "civil" to provide access to it even independent travelers with their own vehicle, the jump without regret. :mchappy:
I saw that ship the bike from KL (Malaysia) to Australia is very simple, :) even if I only see flights to Perth and Darwin (where I had planned to arrive).
It will mean that, from Perth, I will do more through 3000 km in Australia: better! :)

Sorry this is off-topic, but there was a Finnish dude, Jari, who did a very long RTW-trip on a Goldwing1500 about 20 years ago. He had a bad accident, when trying to enter or leave Indonesia, because the ferry (or whatever boat he was using), capsized and sank. Happened close to Dumai actually. Many people drowned, and he almost died, too, he was in a very bad shape, but then luckily was taken into a hospital in time.

He was quite well off financially, so when he got better, he went to Singapore, and hired some professional sea rescue crew, that actually managed to locate the sunken Goldwing in the sea, and lift it up from there! There was a legendary picture on a newspaper here, when they were pulling the bike back up from the water.

The whole operation, including the massive rebuild, that the bike required after being in seawater for a long time surely cost him many times the price of a Goldwing, but he did it, and I think he finally continued the trip with that same bike (ok, maybe only the frame was old.... but talk about not giving up, eh  ?!?)

Magnificent history. I understand: I do not ever abandon my Gold Wing: has been my faithful companion for 750,000 km.
When I had the accident in 2009 in Mongolia, and in Siberia in 2011, the first thought was for her.
And she ALWAYS brought home. :)

I got a quote from Kuala Lumper to Perth, for my motorcycle: 1400 € (MASkargo).

Sounds to be in the ballpark, or actually quite good for such a big bike. I used MASkargo to airlift from Chennai to Bangkok 4,5 years ago... at least back then I read many good reports about them, my experience was also ok, and their pricing seemed very competitive. KL in general gets good feedback from travellers who freight to/from there.

Yes, and do not even need the crate: just a platform and a cloth covering the motorcycle (which I already have, the cloth).
It 's really easy: just deliver the bike (and pay, even credit card) at least 6 hours before.
Unfortunately the other flights are not so simple (from Australia and from Brazil).

pecha72 24 Nov 2012 16:51

If your timing is tight, you might wanna double-check that 6 hrs... Not saying it is certainly incorrect, but at least back then the cooldown-period was 24hrs (I had this both in India and in Indonesia). The newest IATA rulebook section on dangerous goods should be decisive. Freight agents are not always 100% up to date on everything.

Thanks, in fact I do not count the absolute knowing of 6 hours. I just know that I do not have to wait two days at the airport. Then a lot also depends on when the first cargo airplane (there are about every day, but at different times). :)
When I arrive, arrival, and when I leave, I leave.
I travel fast and program the programmable, but I have the hassle of times. :)
