Shipping from Vancouver to South America
I'd like to fly my bike (and myself) to Columbia, Equador or Peru. Anyone have a recommended carrier out of Vancouver, BC?

For a bit of information, you might have a peek at this thread. Although it is two years old, there might be a bit of information in it for you. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...go-chile-37689 I think the way to go was the Thomas and Andrea did. But they used sea freight, and there is always a caveat with going by sea! Cheers, Ian |
Thanks for the lead. This site is so huge and with so much info that I'm finding it helpful but sometimes a bit difficult to find specifics. i knew there must be something in some thread somewhere! Did you end up going? Did you use this same method of shipping?

Hi Adrienne,
When are you planning to leave on your trip? My son and I are planning to ship our bikes down to Chile by cargo ship as the cost appears to be much less than by air. Currently we are planning to attend the Nakusp meeting, and with info gathered, prepare the bikes for transport and ship them out. We plan on meeting the bikes down in Chile in October. If this sounds interesting, maybe we could look at shipping the bikes all together? Regards Mark |
We are also looking to ship our bikes (KKLR650 and DRZ400) in October to Chile. To anywhere in South America, really, but it seems reasonable to explore Patagonia starting in October then work our way northwards when it gets less hospitable weather-wise down there.
I was thinking that flying would be the easiest, but I don't know if it is prohibitively expensive. Mark, have you started getting quotes for sea shipping? How many bikes before there's a bulk discount? (I actually assume that would be when there's enough bikes to fill a container.) I'll post more when we start getting some specific quotes. -Laura |
Do we know how many bikes it takes to fill a container? I'm subscribed to this thread but the variable for me is some knee surgery in the fall. Date as yet unknown.

Hi Laura,
It appears our thinking is very similar. We have got 2 quotes so far. See 1 attached Thank you for contacting UBox Worldwide. Please let me know if you have any questions or need more information. You can email us or call us at 713-539-1852. Your international shipping quote is: From: warehouse in Vancouver To: warehouse in San Antonio TOTAL cubic feet: 200 Rate per cubic foot: $14 Cost without discount: $2800 Volume discount: $560 Additional cost: Documentation Fee: $25 Canadian border crossing fee: $75 Warehouse surcharge - per cubic meter (35 cft) : $8 Total ocean freight costs: $2348 Insurance: $300 (optional) Transit time: 41 days There are extra costs to work through Chilean Customs. It appears that we can consolidate the bikes further to reduce the size of the crate, thus the price. We would be happy to investigate shipping bikes together to save more money and a container shipment with more bikes might be a great option if others are heading the same way at the same time. Our thoughts for travel once we reach Chile is to head for Puerto Montt. I understand that there is a ferry from there to Puerto Natales. Can anyone confirm bikes can be shipped with us on this Ferry? Thanks Regards Mark |
Hi Sprint,
based on the numbers, I think we could get 6-10 bikes without stacking them, in a 20 ft container. Just my guess. Regards Mark |
Mark and others shipping south:
I shipped down by ship in December '08. Check blog (horizonsunlimited.com/tstories/thode) I would suggest you contact Martina at "villakunterbuntvalpo@yahoo.de" she and Anso put together a container for four bikes coming back to California. I did not use her services when shipping down as I had already made a commitment before I got numbers from her but it was very close to same cost. Having someone on that end is most helpful. I tried to find enough people to fill a container with bikes but no luck. If you can do it, you will save a bundle. Basic container will be m/l $2000 plus all the port charges and fees. My costs came to $1350 if I remember correctly. Flying has many advantages but with the cost of fuel the best quote I got was $3800. I plan on being at Nakusp and will offer what little wisdom I gained to those who are interested. Bob:scooter: |
Thanks Bob.
I have been in touch with Martina for over a month now, but she is unable to ship our bikes out of Vancouver. Shipping 2 bikes appears to be more economical from Van, but shipping 4 or more in a container sounds more economical from Seattle if possible. I have read numerous blogs about Martina and Enzo and their help to others. I would like to give them as much of my business as I can. 1 of the reasons that I want to ship to San Antonio is its close to Valpo and they can help. Looking forward to meeting you and others at the Nakusp meeting, gaining info and listening to stories. Thanks again Mark |
I want to ride to South America but I can't enter the US. I would be in for shipping out of Vancouver if the cost is reasonable. I'm in Ontario now but don't mind riding the bike out there for a good deal on shipping. When are you planning to ship out?
|
We're collecting some quotes right now for shipping out of Seattle, both by air and by sea. Once the first round of quotes comes in, I'll post what we found.
-Laura |
Seattle is no good for me. I can't go to the States at all.

Martina got back to me and suggested Baseline Forwarding. Marwin @ Baseline quoted me today to ship 2 bikes from Vancouver to San Antonio, Chile for $1171.56 CAN.
We have to crate and deliver the bikes to a warehouse in Delta and should take 35-40 days transit time. Talked to 2 different dealers and both are willing to give metal/cardboard motorcycle crates for FREE. Found air flights for ourselves from Seattle to Santiago today $489 USD each, Last week they were $607 USD each. Mark |

Hi Sean,
That price is for both bikes. That rate is based on the cubic meter of crate size. Marwin's phone # is 1-877-232-2206 We booked of flight to Santiago October 5. We are thinking of shipping our bikes out Sept 1 to arrive the week of Oct 13. That would give us a week of spanish classes in Santiago before picking up our bikes. Right now flight from Vancouver to Santiago on Oct 5 is $694 USD. Check out Kayak.com. Great search engine for flights and travel. If you want help crating, let me know. Whats one more? Mark |
Just to add in the info that we've gathered so far....
One quote each for sea and air. For a 20-foot container from Seattle to Valparaiso, $3150 (USD). However, that is Port to Port so doesn't include getting the empty container from the port to the shipping agent and then getting the full container back to the port, nor does it include getting it through customs in Seattle. And I don't know what the port fees would be on the Chilean side. Sounds like using Baseline Forwarding out of Vancouver is a better deal, unless the container is FULL of bikes. For air freight Seattle to Santiago, the quote is USD$2578.55. That's for a crate 42"Lx72"Wx48"H weighing 318 kg. (inches and kilos in the same quote!) However, that size crate would be charged for 397 kg, so presumable, 397 kg is really the weight limit. We would have to deliver the crate to the facility in Seattle. The bikes would travel via LAX and MIA. 4-6 days transit time. The lower transit time for air freight sure is nice. I don't know how different the hassles are for each mode in Chile. I've been assuming that we would probably have to hire a shipping agent in Chile to handle the port rigamarole, but I don't know about airfreight. Anybody have input on that one? Thanks, Laura |
Hi Laura,
Martina has given me an estimate of $100.000 pesos (Approx $200 CAN) per bike to help through customs. Not sure of the customs charges at the Chile import side. There may be a few other smaller charges like storage at the warehouse until we pick them up. We can also arrange to stay with them at their Villa Kunterbunt Valpo. Mark |
Mark, Thanks for the lead. I'm days away from departure and Baseline Forwarding (Marwan) came through with a flight for the bike directly into Bogota. We leave this week-end. I'll update the shipping database for anyone else interested... I'm convinced Baseline is the only gig in town doing bikes.
See you in SA! |
Looks like I'm out of the loop as far as joining in on the transport of bikes to SA due to sliding knee surgery dates. LOTS of great info here and I will Bookmark the thread for future reference. Shipping out of Miami would be the more logical choice for me. Hopefully I'm going to attending the HU meeting in North Carolina in a few weeks where I hope to get more info on shipping from the East Coast.
Thanks all, and Moxie - have a marvelous and safe adventure. |
Hey Moxie.
How much did it cost you for one bike? How long of a notice did you need to give before shipping the bike? I'm in Ontario and might ride my bike out to BC to ship in South. |
Hi Moxie. Sent you a PM that may be of some help regarding Bogota. Good Luck.
