Just out our curiosity:

What kind of bike (arrpox weight/ volume if you know)
Why arent you driving into The Stans (via China or Pakistan)?
Which country to you plan to ship to?
Expected cost?

Im interested because I may do the same, but currently plan to keep 2-wheels on the ground the whole way (I'm in India now).

I'm thinking of entering Pakistan in April, then China as quickly after. I still have to organize most of this. If you want to join, shoot me a message. I'd like to get a group for China obviously. However, if its FAR easier to just ship from Kathmandu to, say, Kyrgyzstan, I'll just do that.

Also trying to ship from India to "The Stans"

I'm in the same boat...Am in India and want to ship a bike to any one of the Stans but am having a hard time finding if it is possible. I would go overland through Pakistan but I am with a US passport and they wont give me a visa. Did anyone ever make any progress on this question of shipping from Nepal or India to The Stans?

Mono, how do you know they won't issue a visa? You'd have to apply from home country obv. I'm in the same boat, in India with us passport. I plan to send my blank second passport to dc soon and see if I get a visa.

If you will come in Nepal (very easy from India)we could share experience and Chinese guide cost .
If interesting ,let me know please.
Anyway have a good trip. Bye Roberto

Robertos...I would be interested in hearing more about your plans. I am having issues with pakistan (only country on my route that requires carnet and it WAY expensive), so am looking for a way to get to "The Stans" without passing through Pakistan. Have you done done any research yet about what the costs would be for permits etc. to go from nepal into china all the way to Kyrgyzstan?

I am smack int he middle of this process right now. In talks with a logistics company to air freight two bikes from Delhi to Bishkek. Right now price for two bikes seems to be around US$2500. Still much to figure out about how clearing customs works in Bishkek but Im working on that now. If anyone wants to know more you can message me. If we get more people onboard prices will also drop a bit. Right now ETD is mid May.

India to Kirgistan, Iran crossing

Question to Roberto.

did you solve the problems?
How do you do this so easily to go from Nepal, to Kirgistan, Iran...
Do you have all visa or do you get them in Nepal on your travel?

I am german and try to go via turkey, Iran, Pakistan to India. shipping back the bike from india is expensive, so I think of going back via kirgistan.

Question: when I fly out of india (without the motorbike) , I need already the stamp of the custom, that the motorbike will also fly outside?

I just called the autoclub, they told be I am not allowed to fly outside as long as the motorbike is still in the country. that would be an offense to the carnet.

All very difficult. If I want to do a round trip: germany-turkey-iran-pakistan-iran-turkmenistan, usbekistan, kirgistan-germany(via russia or iran), that means I need a lot of visa and 3 times crossing iran.

any advices?

next thing is: When I am in Iran I would like to fly for a week to austria without the bike. they told me it is impossible. I would have to park my bike at the customs and pay a lot every day.

I write this from Dushanbe, Tajikistan after having successfully air freighted our bike from Delhi to Bishkek, so yes, it can be done. The quick details:

Cost was $2250 (yep, a lot but hey, almost the same for the china permit and hard to put a pricetag on the value of getting through Pakistan sans bullet holes

The guy needs at least a 2 week heads up to get things moving and will need all the normal documents (passport, bike registration, india visa etc.)

He will then need to take the bike one week before the date you want it to arrive and will not be able to promise the date it will aririve until after it clears customs but claims he can have it there +- 2 days...in our case it was a day later.

He picks up the bike from your location crates it (did a very pro job...and yes you can throw all your gear in the crate as well) and take it to customs. India customs clearance, bike pickup/transport to customs/airport, and crating is all included in price.

Once it clears customs he begins to talk to the airline to confirm the next available flight he can get it on, then he can give you the exact date of arrive and air freight bill etc.

As for recieving in Bishkek it was quite painless and we paid nothing for customs clearance, but did pay a hefty Dangerous Good Storage fee that could have been avoided (most of it at least) if it had arrived during the week (word to wise...try and plan to have the bike arrive midweek so that the people who need to give the stamps and signatures will be around)

The company is called Sri Sai Cargo Movers. They pretty much only deal with motorcycles so are very experienced. I was connected to him through a company I work with in Delhi. He can probably help you with other destinations as well. If you are serious about doing this send me an email and Ill send you his info. thescenicroutethroughlife@gmail.com
