Shipping from Dilli to Darwin
 

HI,

Has anybody recent information about shipping from Dilli (Timor) to Darwin (Australia)? I am actually on Java and need to plan shipping my bike to Australia.

A fellow-biker told me a couple of months ago that Toll Perkins is replaced by another company and this new company doesn't do consolidated freight. It means you have to fill up a container yourself. I can't find any confirmation of this storey.

Hi Mart,

I am trying to organise the same trip in the opposite direction at the moment.

You are correct, Perkins has been bought out by ANL - ANL : Global carrier offering worldwide shipping services.

ANL themselves are only interested in doing full container loads, but they referred me onto their logistics division - I spoke to Shirley who seemed helpful (PM me for her Australian mobile number).

They can ship a bike as "LCL", meaning you share the container and only pay for your cubic weight. They do want the bike crated.

I am awaiting an email with their quote and more details, once I have the email address of the correct department I'll post it here for all.

Don't forget as well you'll need to spend a *LOT* of time cleaning the bike in Dili before crating it - the Australian Quarantine Service is very very demanding, not a single speck of dirt or blade of grass allowed.

Remember to clean also tent pegs, velcros etc.

Well they are prompt on their emails, at least.

Indicative cost is $300AUD per cubic metre - and likely to be more expensive next year. So for a 2m x 1m x 1.5m crate it's pushing $1000AUD already!

I do not think there is air cargo option available from Dili to Darwin. Reason is that the planes are too small so that you could fit bike in.

Maybe they have bigger planes now than 1,5 years ago when I crossed this area.

The price you mentioned, 300 AUS per cubic meter, is that an all in price? Including custom and handling fees, cost of documents and all things buraucrats love so much? If so, the price is not that ridiculous. I shipped quite a few times, know exactly the size of the crate i need. I calculated as follows. Crate seize: 206×94×117 cm = 2.265 cub.meter. Costs: 2.265 × 300 = 680 AUS = 465 EURO. Not that bad if it's all in. However, I would appreciate it if you would post the results of your investigations to other companies. Have you thought about shipping to Bali?

G'day Mart & PLR,

I'm sorry to inform you that since Perkins shipping sold the operation to Toll then Toll passed it on to ANL, the service has gone way down hill and up in price. To make matters worse in the process taking the one person and the contact here in Darwin with them .......... James Geddies. There is no address to contact or confront this $%#*&. I have hosted countless Hubbers on their way to and from Dili and Darwin (you guys too if you like) and ALL have the same opinion of this oxygen thief and his lack of care and service in his time with all 3 companies.

Paul & Angie (twowheels03) recorded 40 minutes of lies and still he continued to lie regarding shipping time and dates .......!!! Now you wont get much if any change form $1000 AU to get you bike from Dili to Darwin once you pay all the fees, and it will take anywhere from 4 - 8 weeks as the Barge goes from Dili to Singapore then to Darwin. You can now book LCL and creates were not required when Frank (Motofoto) lindert-photography used the service from Dili to Darwin however they did drop and damage the bike and messed Frank around for a month not informing him of times, dates, fees and extra charges, the tales of grief go on and on, so a crate might be a good idea, but where to find one in Dili?

There are no other shipping services other than Singapore to Darwin and that's a drama as you will have to truck the bike from Malaysia to the port in Singapore as the Singapore fees are prohibitive. My advice is to do a round trip then fly your bike from KUL to DRW direct (the only wide body aircraft service from Asia to Darwin) on Malaysian Airlines or Jetstar via Singapore, a seat on Jetstar is about $150 one way, Malaysian is about $530. As far as the airfreight price is concerned you would have to do some homework and check.

I agree, air cargo between Darwin-Dili is not an option, bikes won't fit in the cargo hold.

Damn, now I'm thinking about flying direct to KL from Sydney and starting the trip there, kind of kills the "Sydney to London" vibe though!

Doing the Oz sector is a must if you wish to retain the Sydney to London status! Flying the bike to KUL from DRW is just the smart and economical way to go about it, without being ripped off and the cost of having to wait a month + in the process! End result, Sydney to London vibe retained!

Now having said that, if it were me, bugger the status/vibe, I'd just head straight for KL, the adventure begins!

With Steph’s recent experience in mind, surely it must be possible to air freight in the opposite direction?

Going west (and north) riding across c. half of Indonesia - from Bali to northern Sumatra - will be quite an experience. Of course, from Bali there’s always the option of looping east around Nusa Tenggara, then back through Bali if you wanted to see more of the country.

Indonesia is unique and quite different from the rest of SE Asia and my advice would be not to skip over it, if there’s any chance of covering at least some Indo ground.

Hi! April this year we shipped two motorbikes from Darwin to Dili with Toll
Although quite expensive (400 AUD/bike) it all went really smoothly.
That said, there was a big delay (3wks on a sceduled 4days) but for us that ment being in east-timor longer which I highly recommend! Do not be tempted to skip the second newest country in the world! The lack of infrastructure and wealth is compensated easily by the beautifull cheer of the Timorese!
Back on topic: You should contact Toll, and I can emag ine arranging transport from the DiliDili side requires a little more hands and feet...

We shipped 2 bikes smoothly from Darwin to Dili in October, as did others. There are teething issues but all went well. ANL just does paperwork. The bikes do not have to be Crated. PJ Customs handles them in Darwin as they always have. TOLL handles them in Dili.
Costs are no different. Just try to keep height down. But your own tie downs.
