Shipping bikes from Sydney, AUST. to Calcutta, India

Hi guys,

Has anyone done this? If so, who did you use and would you recommend them?

Sorry I wasn't able to find these answers by searching.

Regards

I have shipped by sea from Oz to Europe. I haven´t shipped to Calcutta, but I have shipped by air from India (Chennai) at the end of 2007.

Google Tradelanes Global Solutions, their head office is in Melbourne, but I used them to ship by sea out of Sydney (they used another company there as their agent, so I was able to handle everything in Sydney). They can handle shipping by sea or by air. I would recommend them, but do keep in mind, that I shipped with them a long time ago, in April 2008.

A word of warning about shipping to India, though... it will probably test your nerves – even in the best case scenario – and also take at least a few days, to get the bikes cleared from the customs! Personally I would not ship there by sea, as seaports are usually the worst (and I would think twice even before shipping there by air!) Note, that the bikes will need a carnet for India. Almost everyone, who has shipped there, says the Indian end either turned out to be very laborous, or just simply a nightmare.

Actually Kathmandu Nepal seems to get relatively good feedback from travellers, who have shipped their bikes there (mostly from Bangkok, to by-pass Burma, and because of this, there has been relatively steady traffic of motorcycles on that route). So that´s what I would consider to do, instead of shipping to India. Good luck!
