This is a little out of date as it is 10 years since I flew my bike from Montevideo to London but I remember Lufthansa were the airline of choice for flying bikes to or from South America, you might start with them.

Tom-Traveller 9 Jul 2010 23:31

try ...

LuxairGroup | Corporate Site,,

We met a pilot in Valpo, who works for them and he flew his bike to Santiago

....or ask around the airlines

Good Luck :thumbup1:

Tom-Traveller 9 Jul 2010 23:41

Hi Cowgirl

Why flying ?

...till November, there is still plenty of time ....

Ask Martina from the Villa Kunterbunt in Valparaiso for a quote, the shipping is 4-5 weeks in a crate/container .... you can time it with your flight and if it is delayed, the Villa is the perfect place to hang loose .... :D

villakunterbuntvalpo@yahoo.de

Enzo & Martina are great, they get your bike out of custom, etc. .... :scooter:

Transport to Argentina

Hi cowgirl,
I'm from Holland too (Haarlem) and finding out about prices from A"dam to Bogota and from B.A. back again. I'm planning a trip in november also.
To send the bike by air will cost you around € 2000 - € 2500 one way (all inclusive), while sending by sea cargo will be around € 1000.
My best offer by air so far was from James Cargo, but too expensive for me. I'm waiting for an offer by another company.

James Cargo Services Ltd.
Tel: +44 (0)1753 687722 ext. 216
Fax: +44 (0)1753 687723
email: James Cargo Services IATA, AATA, IPATA and DEFRA approved Cargo Agent
web: Motorcycle Shipping, Transport and Freight

I've got a few good options by sea cargo from Amsterdam or Rotterdam but keep in mind you'll have to send the bike at least 3 weeks up front. If you're interested let me know, I'll give you some adresses and prices.

Good luck,
Rob

kito 21 Jul 2010 20:24

does it have to BA ? i just shiped my bike from Suriname to Rotterdam for 495 euros all in and they said that it should be about the same price to ship it back .

Kenny013 24 Jul 2010 10:55

Ha Cowgirl,
I'm planning to ship my bike from Rotterdam to BA Argentina in beginning of october.
Got a deal for €400, (115€/m3) then it's in the harbour of BA. http://www.damco.com/Pages/default.aspx can give you the email adres.
Deliver your bike on friday, sailing on wednesday, arrival 3 weeks later.
I contacted dakar_motos_index if they are able to get the bike into Argentina. Hope they can.
Could anyone recommend, if my first option fails, an other "broker" in Buenos Aires, who can "import" my bike?

Airtransport from Argentina to Europe seems to be cheaper, heart €1000 (in 2007), got an adress if you want.
Cheers

shipping the bike to argentina from the netherlands

Hi Rob from Haarlem,
soundz interesting, could you give me some more info/adresses on the shipping of your bike.Have you tried Peet van Dam in Rotterdam,is he as expensive as wel?2500 one way is far to expensive for me,too.but all the hassel of going to the habour day after day to get the bike out of customs and the hidden costs put me of the idea of sending the bike by ship.
Where`s Bogota?
cowgirl

cowgirl 25 Jul 2010 18:02

Hi Kenny,
i would appreciate the adress on airfreight from Argentina to Europe,is it an argentinien company?coz my travells start in holland, does that matter? What are your experiences with air/seafreight and why do you choose seafreight?isn`t is a lot of hassel to get the bike out on the other end?what about the hidden costs?is it your first time to travell to latin america/argentina?for me it is ,so i`d be happy with every information.thanks a lot, cowgirl

Kenny013 31 Jul 2010 15:02

Hi Cowgirl,
For me it's the first time to South America too, did send my bike to Australia but thats completely different.
Why by seafreight, air is probably way more expensive, trying to find out.
But as it seems Damco will send your bike by sea for €400, air will cost at least €1000 (300KG non-dangerous goods), at this end.
In Argentina habour could be, according to Sandra from "Dakar Motos", a max of $700 (€560) more expensive as airfreight, though I don't expect this a big difference, allthough "Dakar Motos" prefer airfreight by sea seems to be cheaper.
The hassle of getting your bike in worried me too, but Sandra from Dakar Motos reassured me, she is going to "import" the bike with me.
Harbour seems to take abit longer as airport, few days.

Been searching and found an airfreighthandler in The Netherlands,
Marco de Jonge
Airfreight Manager
Bellville Rodair International BV
Leisteen 7
2132 ME Hoofddorp
The Netherlands
Asked for an offer last monday and would get one yesterday, but till this far a empty mailbox.
[Edit]
bij deze onze offerte:
vracht kosten: euro 2.55 pkg
fuel euro 0.70 pkg
secutiry euro 0.15 pkg
douane en afhandeling euro 85.00
gevaarlijke stoffen toeslag euro 250.00 (certificeren van de zending)
gevaarlijke stoffen check euro 125.00
Totaal 1480 € Nederlandse zijde
[/Edit]
Lady from Lufthansa told me "normal" airfreight is €3,13/KG, tough a motorbike is marked as dangerous goods and handled differently.
Maybe you could get around the "dangerous goods" part if you send your petrol tank by sea. As sparepart to "Dakar Motos" for instance.
Would still give you the advantage of "quick" import.
[Edit]
Also oil etc must be removed from the motorbike to make a chance on non-dangerous goods : ( .

Airfreight in Buenos Aires:

About hidden costs, found this in an other post:
Costs on the Argentinean side:
CMA gives you a bill in US dollars [US$] which has to be paid at a bank downtown. We paid CMA the following:
- River Plate Toll US$ 90
- THC Destino US$120
- Logistics fee US$ 30.25
- Delivery Order US$ 54.45
- Total costs, including tax = US$ 294.70

At the Terminal [TRP] we paid the following in pesos. Strangely enough the bill is in US dollars, but payment can only be made in pesos!
- Verification US$ 193.60
- Cargo de seguridad US$ 9.68
- Devolucion mty importacion US$ 24.20
- Cargo manipuleo US$ 110.11
- Tasas a las cargas impo US$ 3.63 per ton US$10.89
- Total costs, including tax: US$ 348.48 = 1081 pesos.
Hope to be of help.

For how long are you going to travel and what route?
You can p.m. me :welcome:
It's my first time South America too.

Cheers Kenny013

Hey,

I’m heading towards Europe with my motorcycle, currently in Central Asia.
In late October, I’ll also be looking into shipping from Europe to South America, Argentina or Chile.
Please let me know if you are interested in sharing a container/box, and have the bikes shipped together.
Sharing a container/Box, can get things much cheaper.

With kind Regards from Almaty,
Adam

*Touring Ted* 3 Aug 2010 05:54

If you get stuck at the Argentinian end, I really recommend contacting Sandra from Dakar Motos. She will do all the "fixing" and make it all go smooth for a very reasonable price. Shes WAY cheaper than the office based agents and twice as honest and friendly.

cowgirl 20 Aug 2010 17:36

Hi kenny,
very much appreciate that lot of information you posted,
have you made a choice/booking yet.?what are all the costs added up and have you tried Peet van Dam in Rotterdam yet?Did you get in contact with Dakar Motors yet ,what do they charge for their help?so much info and still so many questions.

cowgirl 20 Aug 2010 17:45

Hi adam,
soundz like a good idea to ship the bikes together,i`m getting a bit lost in all the information.just depends on your timing as wel,got any experience with shipping?my bike will be going there and return,so i don`t know if that`s a problem.got a flight booked to Buenos Aires on 13th of november but won`t need the bike till 4weeks later, keep in touch, cheers, cowgirl

Kenny013 22 Aug 2010 18:18

Ha Cowgirl,

My bike goes with DAMCO on 10th of september, €400 Dutch side, and I expect (estimated guess) a total of $750 (€590) in B.A. includig Dakar Motors.
I tried Peet van Dam in Rotterdam (transported my bike from Australia), but he is allmost twice as expensive.
I have contact with Dakar Motors and Sandra is going to bring the bike in, costs $250.
Note that when your bike arrives in the harbour you got 5days (not workingdays but just 5 days) to get your bike out of the warehouse.
After that they will charge storage, could end up expensive.
You have to be there in person to collect your bike.

Hope this answers your questions.

6,5 weeks till lift off :clap:______:mchappy:_______

adamiko 8 Sep 2010 14:49

Hallo Cowgirl @ Kenny,

Greetings from Tbilisi Georgia.

Thank you for the very useful information Kenny, defiantly looks like the way to go.

Cowgirl, I’ve shipped by Air/Sea/Ferry about 10 times in the past, so yes, I have some experience with shipping a motorbike to different continents.
My timetable for shipping is around the 20th of October 2010, and I hope to clear the bike not later than 20th of November, and ride to Ushuaia for the Christmas meeting there.
If these dates work for you Cowgirl, and if you like, we can try and ship together, maybe it will make the process a bit cheaper. I can call/contact you when in Europe, hopefully, around the 25th of September.

Adios for now, and thank again for all the good advice,
Adam

Thoughts of crating?

I don't hear anybody of you guys about crating the bike. You're all shipping without a crate?
Apart from the costs mentioned you need a crate. At least I do, I was told bij various transporters. The crate needs to be certified and built by a certified crating company. Costs at least € 400 incl tax. Hope I can carry it with me for the way back. :rolleyes2:

Cowgirl I forgot about this thread but to answer your question from before, I'm shipping to Colombia, back from BA. Damco has a good offer but has no agent in Colombia, that's why I chose for another company (vd Put Oceanfreight) All similar prices, Peet van Dam is similar too but more expensive on the crate (€550)

Cheers,:mchappy:
Rob

Kenny013 11 Sep 2010 12:30

@roblaan
Bike is in a crate, don't think they even take uncrated bikes.
In my homble opinion you shouldn't want to ship your bike uncrated.
Ask local motorbike companies, they get their new bikes in crates, and regard it as waste. you can often get them for free.
You can make it yourself, though you maybe have to certify it that the wood is treated.

3,5 weeks till lift off :clap:______:mchappy:_______
Bike is in Rotterdam in the harbour.

roblaan 12 Sep 2010 23:05

Thanks Kenny, already made some arrangements. My trip is from nov 1st till medio februari. Starting in Colombia and ending in B.A. Maybe our paths will cross. Have lots of fun! :mchappy:
